Solar panel whilst running

I have a solar panel and I would like to know if it has to be disconnected whilst the engine is running?

Even if the solar panel doesn't have a regulator the engine alternater certainly does so it works round the other way.
So absolutly no reason to disconnect the solar panels.

Thw question is will the solar panel take a revserse bias, i.e. the alternator running at a higher voltage than the solar panel. Back of my mind is a blocking diode being fitted to solar panels to stop a back feed, check with manufacturer or installer.

Thanks to all. I've checked and the panel does indeed have a blocking diode installed. No need to disconnect. All we need now is some sunshine.

Would have to be a bit careful here, Bill.

Solar panels are usually fitted with shunt regulators.

Having said that, open circuit (or off load) they reach about 17 Volts so would not be reverse biased.

Talking to a electrian this morning, had a boat that lost it's rev counter.
Turned out the unregulated solar panel was generating a higher voltage than the alternator, this shut down, thus no rev counter as it was driven from the alternator.

So there can be a prob.
