Last weekend we spent our time learning how to do three point turns and coming alongside within our home marina. The outcome is shiny new RYA Helmsman tickets which means that at last we are insured to go out alone on our boat :)

I can recommend Nigel (Hayling Sea School) for his calm demeanor and confidence building approach in taking us on as complete newbies. The extra large fenders he brought with him came in useful :D I'm sure he will appreciate the plug for his new web site: http://www.haylingseaschool.co.uk/

After Saturday's cold and damp day it was great on Sunday to be able to take the rear canvas off and take a trip from Portsmouth to Bembridge. As newbies we kept the speed down to a maximum of 27 knots which seemed fast enough for us anyway. Apologies for not posting photos but Nigel was making us do the passage planning, navigation whilst checking we didn't run into anything or aground so I didn't get around to taking any.

Even after two days of fairly intensive manouvering exercises I am aware of my limitations so I'll be off to the chandlers for many more fenders before we go out on our own. It will also have to be a low wind day too as berthing in wind is rather challenging with our current skill levels and I would rather not damage any boats (including mine). I'm assuming that in the season proper there will be more boats around to miss as it was very quiet out.

Congratulations.

But, why are you only insured now you have a RYA Helmsman ticket?

A condition on my insurance certificate that I had to complete a recognised RYA course before I could use the boat without a qualified skipper supervising. As I had no prior motor boating experience it didn't surprise me and now I have my first couple of days experience I can understand why.

Top Tip
Practise what you have picked up on your Course.

Specially when its a bit breezy like.

Oh!
I just noticed yer Darn Sarf

OOP North, we are all Hardy and stuff:p

What are 'Fenders'?
:D

Well done on your ticket, you'll find that was time well spent. The insurance company helped you muchly there.

Nigel is a busy guy on sail and power and always keen to offer help.

Are you going to keep the boat at Hayling or were you just there for the course?

You'll see there are several people on here that are based there. If you add a little more to your profile we'd know about your boat and location too.

Enjoy your first season. ;)

Craft Insure and Towergate Mardon don't.

I am with Craft Insure and have been since I took up boating. Although I did my PB2, they never asked for any training.

Touch wood, I have never hit anyone - okay I use an old Nimbus in the harbour as a 'glancing fender' but then everyone does.

Good on you for getting training! i remember when we first too the sealine out we were terrified!! hoppefully the training will take some of the stress away!

Unfortunatly the trainer for our own boat tuition day was far from professional, announcing on arrival "its not really my style of boat and i dont know much about them but lets see how we go" and then proceding to patronise my other half to the point the usually calm person was all set to drop the guy and kick him off the back! apparently young women are an optional extra on sports boats to sit on the bathing platform, heavens above they should want to be confident in helming the boat!

anyway, i hope Hayling sea school and Nigel have imporoved their ways along with their new website, we for one were not satisfied customers.

Good luck and i hope the weather plays ball so you can really enjoy the new boat!
