So I\'ve bought some softwood plugs ...

and I'm ready to tie them to the through hull fittings ...but what is the size of the hole I will be trying to plug? Must I protect against the complete hull fitting working free (eg a Blakes 38mm toilet outlet) or the top plate working loose or the hose coming off?

Re: So I\'ve bought some softwood plugs ...

Hope you have better luck with them than a friend of mine last weekend while sailing from Barcelona to Blanes; The through hull LOG fitting gave way, "plastic fatigue" according to the surveyour and non of the plugs was large enough to fit the hole.

Eventually rescued by the Guardia Civil using two boats to raft him ashore while using two petrol pumps to help drain her. At one statge the water was over a metre deep which must have been pretty frightening in an 8 mtr. boat.

No doubt we'll all get to hear the full details shortly.

The hole was plugged using a "universal" cone tapering from 100mm diameter to 0mm over a length of 300mm.

Log fittings

I've often thought that those plastic fittings don't look very substantial. I wonder if there is a reliable method of checking them.

I've read that metal fittings should be used below the water line (not that all of mine are) but if the log comes with a plastic fitting..............

G'day Peter,
Your softwood plugs should be tapered to accommodate both the total fitting failure or a hose loss, and should be attached to the pipe leading from the fitting. Tip, don't use anything that may require cutting to get it off.
Hope this helps
