So how much is a reasonable rate?

French Marine not seen to be good value at 43 quid an hour, so how mmuch is reasonable

I would not resent 30 quid an hour.

But I insist on a fixed tariff for normal servicing. No hidden extras.

I'll agree with that figure, and conditions. A standard service should take roughly the same length of time (depending on access) on almost any boat, so a fixed quote seems reasonable to me

£30 an hour would seem reasonable. But I reckon you can change the oil and the filters etc in about an hour. How French Marine can justify £180 for an hours work when Pyro's boat is at the same Marina as French Marine so they don't have to travel more than a few hundred yards is totally beyond me.

The rate's reasonable - what's not reasonable is charging 'travel time'.

I get paid to work 08H30-17H00.
This does not mean I can leave home at 08H30 and turn up whenever, nor does this mean I can leave whenever to be home by 17H00.

You get paid for time spent on the job - and that's it.

My only argument there would be that you wouldn't expect a garage to service your car at home without some kind of surcharge, though maybe my argument is flawed so open to opinion

Normally done that way because it's often dangerous to drive with it damaged, but out of interest, did you check to see how much it would cost if you took it to a garage ?

Good point. I suppose the best way for someone to do it with boats is to arrange to do a load at the same location in one go, so travel time wouldn't come into it

i dont know if the same rules apply to boats but with regard to motor vehicle servicing, its all been worked out y some software company and garages work out the bill using the software, same goes for car body repairs the Insurance companies have it all worked out and tell you what you are going to charge.

Garage rates vary, the cheapest hourly rates are body shops then most professional set ups start charging at around 45 quid an hour rising to about 120 an hour for your beemer garage.A lot of the high chargers are down to the cost of the equipment,an anyliser can cost 25 grand etc, thats the little electronic gadget that he uses to check your exaust emissions.

£30 per hour would seem ok to me. The shocking question is how much would your boat really have cost you if you paid someone to do all the work you have done on it, at that rate /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Jeez Alan, I am not dropping my rate to match French Marines. I would go out of business. Think of all the travelling.

I don't resent the beemer garage. They have a lot of kit that makes aservice very quick, clean and costing less that the quoted one for the boat. I can't see much "travelling" time in FM quote, they just have to walk from there office to the boat! Although, the "man and van" was in a similar (very) ball park, and I assume he doesn't have the workshop at marina type overheads of the others.

£30/hour OK, I guess.

I have a problem with so-called fixed rates for on board jobs -it's a one way trip for the owner. The fixed rate is always generous for the engineer and if something is amiss, the clock takes off! Or even worse, it's a case of "have to rebook that sir, how about next year...?"

Mid £30's per hour plus VAT is the rate I seem to encounter, some charge mileage, others not. It can pay to bring your boat to them - that's what I have done in the past for smaller jobs - timer belt etc.

You learn so much looking over the engineer's shoulder it has to be right to be there when the job's done. I do.
