SNSM tariffs for towing

It was only the other day that I was thinking we were about due for an RNLI-bashing post from Sybarite. And he never disappoints!

I was under the impression that the SNSM only charges for towing in boats, and that any rescue where life might be in danger would be done for free. But according to that webpage they also charge for assisting windsurfers, kitesurfers and sailing dinghies, which in my experience often, although by no means always, does involve a risk to life.
If someone does find themselves in genuine difficulties, and they're not going to make it back unaided, far better that they call for help early, rather than delaying because they're worried about incurring a large bill.

I know I'm not totally objective, given my role as ILB crew, but I think we're better off with the RNLI way of doing things, thanks.

Interesting link, a few pages in they are threatening marinas who may not have a berth available for their commercially towed casualty- are they not particularly popular that they have to resort to legal threats?

Makes Sea Start seem pretty good value - about £160 pa and they'll either fix it for you or tow you if you're less than 3 miles out (though they've been known to go further). They'll even let you join on the spot if you call them out and you're not a member.

...and they won't have a pop at you in the media afterwards. It's a bargain.

Do they attend call outs in France?

Charges are made on a strictly cost basis. In fact the SNSM has had unfair competition issues with commercial ventures.

In what way is competition unfair? Because the money doesn't go to the public purse? Or because commercial ventures are willing to undercut the SNSM?

Presumably the commercial towage companies complain that the SNSM is doing them out of a job.

The French lifeboat came out to us when we had to seek a port of refuge and hadnt got the relevant chart. They were very efficient, spoke good english and led us into harbour through the sand banks. Because we didnt have a tow there was no charge.

The shore station radio contact was just as efficient as the MCA and again in English. I wonder if the MCA or the RNLI could do a rescue in French
