snapped tiller extension

The tiller extension is snapped at its joint, to replace this is it a case of digging out the joint and replacing it with a similar style? or buy something that screws or attaches onto the tiller itself?

The rectangular cap on the tiller should prise off. You can either buy an new tiller extension, or repair the extension with a bit from chandler, or maybe even the chandler will fit the repair part (intact rubber doofah) for you.

How about one of these

The problem with those I find is that they have a habit of locking during a tack as you switch sides. Not necessarily a problem in a big boat but on a tippy dinghy it can often lead to a swim!

This is the type of tiller extension joint I have on my sailing dinghy. Basically the same . Never known it to lock

Not sure it it would be quite heavy enough though for the OP's 18footer.

Plenty of alternatives to choose from although rather surprised that the OP needs a tiller extension on his boat. I'ver never needed one on my Sea Wych!

Not sure I need one, just it had one and it's broken, and would look better fixed. Plus I could me be steer from the companionway and put the kettle on at the same time

Seasure make a similar one that is detachable from the tiller, I use one on my boat for 10 years.
