smoking on the boat or not ?

I am a smoker but would let them know smoking is only allowed outside, i would probably have that in one place too with an old mat to protect the finished floor if any of them dropped a lighted fag.

On the briefing a simple explanation on what costs can be incurred with even the slightest burn mark in fixtures and fittings and im sure they will understand:)

Probably have them smoke at the stern so the wind while underway will blow all smoke and ash behind everyone else and the boat.

Both me and SWMBO are non-smokers. But like most we have friends that smoke. Thus far at our polite request smoking is only ever done whilst moored or at Anchor and only on the bathing platform holding the butt over the water. In our case, I think the smoking peeps are just pleased to be allowed at all, so have never complained and always been very understanding and careful.

My wife smokes, as does my sister so I have had to make a few rules! If we are tied up somewhere then its on the pontoon only. However being an ex smoker I know it can be difficult to go a day or two so if we are at anchor then its bathing platform only.

I must be lucky, the situation has never arisen as none of my friends or guests smoke. Mind you, now it's been mentioned I may add it to my 'rules & etiquette' leaflet I give to every newcomer on board.

My wife smokes but only on deck or on the pontoon. I smoke cigars but again only on the stern deck and then only seated within finger flick of the side to lose the ash.

I think you should respect the owners wishes anyhow.

:D sorry R....just having strange images of your smoking guests in an unusal stance :D

I'm curious, what did you write on the "proper use of the toilets" chapter? :D

Do you ever get that sinking feeling having to deal with what some guests may try to flush down the bog, as they come aboard?

Not everybody is good at absorbing information that is written on a sticker near the flush button after an afternoon on the turps

Both my wife and I don’t smoke,
But we have a lot of friends who smoke.
On the boat I allow them to smoke outside, and asc them politely to be precautious.

...but they won't, they'll drop ash about, they'll stink up your fabrics and burn holes in your sun cushions or teak.

Smoking is absolutely forbidden on my boat. It's a safety issue first and a damage issue second. I don't have any 'no smoking' signs, but if some guest whips out a packet of cigarettes and goes to say "Can I..?" they get back a look which says "What are you, *completely* nuts?!! This is a boat full of fuel!".

Forget the boat, people who smoke anywhere near us are unlikely to be friends. Non of our family smoke and hence we don't allow it at home, work, car or boat. Ireland declared war on smoking 6 years ago with bans and it has been great for health and comfort in public spaces.
