Smoking on board

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but what do people do when they have a mixed crew, smokers and non smokers. I'm a non smoker, so would not permit smoking below, but I have no objection to anyone smoking on deck, but how do you phrase it so as not to cause offence to anyone, smoker or non smoker, just ask the smokers to stand downwind ?

Downwind yes (or ashore whenever you are attached to land). Just make that clear before anyone is committed to coming so that, if that doesn't work for them, they have the option of ducking out.

I don't worry about offending smokers. If they can't stop smoking, they aren't welcome on board. My boat, my rules. Simples.

I have always asked smokers to do so on-deck only, it has never caused the slighest problem or offence AFAIK. Most smokers would not dream of lighting up when aboard without asking these days (unless they are very rude IMO).

I'm a smoker and definitely would not light up on someone else's boat without asking. I'm happy enough to wait until we get to shore usually. I'm usually racing, so not much time to smoke anyway. On my own boat I smoke all the time, down below included because the cabin consists of 2 cushions and that's about it!

On deck, downwind. Provide ashtray with damp paper towel in the base.

On deck only, for safety reasons as much as anything.

If a non-smoker can't ask them to smoke downwind, or a smoker doesn't automatically do so, maybe they aren't the sort of people I would have on board anyway.

When I was looking for a crew for last summer's cruise I asked for two things:
Good company more important than sailing ability
Non smoker.
The person that responded that had the time (4 months) turned out to use electronic cigarettes which I had no issue with, but then after a couple of days away had a craving for the real thing which was again ok when ashore but not acceptable to me when on a 2 or 3 day passage.
The lack of nicotine made for not good company either, so we parted company in Roscoff.

I know so few smokers these days that's it's rarely an issue but I quite simple about it. We are a non smoking boat. Full stop. A few crew jump off and have a fag when we tie up but no one seems to get agitated when doing without.

I am a smoker. On my boat smoking below is not acceptable, head out of hatch is.

On Deck down wind to none smokers is preferred, if not good distance to windward to allow to dissipate.

As for the people who say no smoking onboard, I wonder how many good crews you let slip by.

I know few smokers who don't automatically go outside to smoke these days. I don't smoke, but I certainly wouldn't refuse to sail with a smoker because of their habit. I don't outlaw smoking down below either. They're my friends, I know their habits and I like my guests to feel a home when sailing with me. It really doesn't bother me since I just open the skylight and the smoke just goes straight out. Most still go outside though especially since its rare not to be in the cockpit anyway.

I gave up the evil weed ten years ago. Two of my regular crew smoke, but without me saying anything, only smoke in the cockpit and sit to leeward to do so.

Recently I bought a pipe (to go with my smock and Breton cap, plus Nutmeg is a gaffer AND I have a beard). It sits in a little draw for emergencies! I got it out a couple of weeks ago for a sneaky self indulgent puff, no one else aboard. It was lovely! Puffing my pipe, cuddling my dog and listening to R4. Perfect moment.

Pipe has been back in its little draw ever since. Some pleasures are just too good!

Amen. I've rejected an otherwise OK house because it smelt of tobacco; it would be a show stopper for a boat, too. Smokers often don't realise how strongly the remains of smoke taint the air, nor how long it lasts.

I am an ex smoker, for more than 30 years, and grew up with both my parents smoking.

I smoke on my boat but only outside. Moses moker wouldn't dream of smoking on someone else's boat. House. Car or Horse. If they're your friends you can just tell them and they won't be offended
