Okay - given the success of UKIP as a namby pamby single issue party, I think we should form a multi-issue 'butt rebel party: Suggestions for the manifesto to include:

Smoking to be banned in public places;
Anyone smoking outside defined public places on the pavement [duh - since when were they private places??] to be arrested for soliciting;
Hunting with dogs only to be allowed under licence where the quarry smokes a pipe; [actually also perhaps those who pee in swimming pools?]
Healthcare to be prohibited for any healthcare workers who once smoked /forums/images/icons/smile.gif;
Pissing elephants definitely to be outlawed - [particularly in swimming pools!];
Yacht racing to be banned unless it involves pissing elephants, and then strictly under licence only;
St Paul's wisdom to be compulsory learning for everyone under the age of 150;
Oh and the best 'til last - keep hold of a good woman, or not be sexist a good man [though they are admittedly harder to come by!!/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

We'll have Tony Bliar out of no 10 before you can pee a Elephantidae. Shame about the W though! /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Being paranoid simply means - having all the facts.

Non smokers

I smoke, have problems striking matches with my paws mind.

I really would like to give up, but do not want to become a non smoker, I have enough to winge about in this world without adding petty media driven hatreds to the score.

I am fed up of being expected to apologise for smoking when I have to put up with binge drinkers and violent drinkers making many city centres a dangerous place to be at night, yet I am scorned for wanting a smoke in a pub. I do not drink very much and would welcome a ban on drinking if smoking is also to be banned.

**disclaimer** I do not smoke in restaurants or areas where there are non smokers who will be forced to breathe my smoke, for example I do not smoke in my car when I am carrying non smokers. I do not smoke in my house, but will smoke in the saloon on the boat, but only because it is totally separate to the sleeping areas.

My first century ,amazing.

I never expected so much response .It was only a casual conversation starter .

My own views havent changed much though.

I would still prefer a competent smoker who keeps a good lookout on watch than an incompetent nonsmoker who doesnt.

Smelly sods can keep it in the cockpit though and I will keep the outboard petrol in the anchor locker from now on .forget who suggested it,why didnt I think of it?

Re: My first century ,amazing.

Well, I brought it to your attention - but I didn't think of it either. Also kicked myself when it was suggested to me!

Re: Non smokers

Yes, yes, yes...
If you looked at the figures then I would guarantee that the effects of alcohol cost the country more than nicotine by a massive percentage. Ban it!
I'd take a bet that alcohol affected driving and alcohol induced crime kills more people than passive smoking too.
As a virtuous smoker I could point at those pariahs of society who drink the mind sapping juice and say "Look, son, that's what it does to you. Shun them".
I'm going to write to Tony...

Funny that ....

SWMBO who craves a puff ..... I stopped many years ago and still I get an odd wish to have a drag ....... even sometimes waking up and I could swear that I have had a fag ..... dreaming !!

I always say ------ the crave never leaves you, it just gets easier to say no.

My wife cheated when I tried to get her to stop ...... nips out to balcony, excuses to visit friends, take dog for a walk etc. so in end I gave up and ran with the tide ..... its her decision.

Just a small remark, if you say 25-30% of the population smoke and as such also the same percentage of sailors: this is only true if you can prove that sailors are evenly distributed among the population, eg. income, education, etc.
But just as it happens, usually smokers are more often member of lower-paid, lower-educated classes. So you won't have 25% smoking sailors.
It also explains why smoking is less accepted: it's a way to put a stigma on poorer people (in general).
And that combined with the fact that they pay more taxes... and die sooner...
I let smokers on my boat because they contribute to the wealth of the nation!
Victor
