A better cure for smelly heads

As others have pointed out, flushing with fresh water is no help against the smell, the problem lies in bugs growing in the inlet pipes and pump.

The best solution for this is to fit one of the small inline devices, (Lee Sanitation do one I think, I bought mine at West Marine in the States), that comes with a deodorant catridge. Throw the cartridge away they are expensive and useless, next time you are in Cherbourg go to the Hypermarket and buy a swimming pool filter chlorine tablet - its about the size of a small tin of baked beans and costs about £2

Whack it with a hammer to break it up and put a couple of pea size pieces in the in line holder, one tablet will give you enough pieces for years of sailing.

Now, when you flush the loo it will smell mildly of chlorine - about as much as a swimming pool, and the H2S smell is banished until its time to ad another tablet - ususally lasts about a week of daily use or a month or so of weekends. Its just a metter of unscrewing a cap on the to add a new tablet.

This has the added bonus of sterilisng the inlet pipe, pump and bowl heads each time the heads are flushed and also keeps the bowl white

I have had this fitted for three years now, it has had no effect on the heads valves or seals and the heads are as sweet as when they were new

Now that sounds my kind of solution, I'll try that, I have to replace my hoses this year anyway, I'll fit one of those jobbies, infact I'll fit three of them, one in each heads!

Are these the filters that I've seen advertised that go in the pipe connecting the pump to the bowl or do they go in the inlet pipe leading to the toilet itself?

Also - anyone any ideas as to how much water a Jabsco sea toilet can pump? I'm still working out how on earth I'm gonna empty my water tanks!!

Re: A better cure for smelly heads

Sorry, I tried this solution a year after fitting the new heads and it DIDN'T work, although it was fitted exactly as Lee Sanitation advised(just before the pump), and it was when it didn't work that I researched the problem and discovered the fresh water solution from www.boatered.com - a US site. All the tablets did was made the water blue, and they certainly didn't last a season.
As other posters have said the problem is the stagnant salt water in the inlet hose and filling it with fresh water effects a cure.
Perhaps on reflection the best place to fit the 'inline' gadget is immediately after the seacock when all the water in the pipe will be treated(I like your swimming pool tablet solution). Lee Sanitation say fit it just before the pump which on my boat must leave at least 6' of hose back to the seacock.
Anyway, as my 'fresh water' solution works I'll stick with it.
Incidently my previous boats head also smelt, again both before and after fitting a new head(both Jabsco/PAR units), but my friends boat two moorings away doesn't smell!

I have a little electric jabsco water puppy pump, for doing these type of jobs, pumping water tanks etc, also I use a wet or dry vacunm for my bilges etc after cleaning them, it's amazing how much the vacunm will lift, but the water puppy is indispensible onboard.

Sounds good - how do you implement that Colin? Is the pump fixed and you run pipes to it from whatever you want to pump or do you just take it to the job and run it off one of the batteries or the cigarette lighter or something?

The pump is on a board, with a long cable and crocodile clips, with a lightly reinforced suction pipe anbout two meters long, I normally use my hose pipe for the outlet, but you can have a length of hose attached, invaluable little pump! I've only just put it on a board! I use it for everything, even pumping out blocked toilets, before getting at them! I swear by those little jabscos'.

Re: Out the box solution!!!!

Hmm,

Ive mailed them with a question about tank size - need to check it would fit on a shelf above the seacocks. The £30 option sounds the best deal, and use a little bleach. OK, the O-ring in the pump might go a bit quicker, but they are only £2 and I resent spending an extra £30 on loo cleaner!
