Our fridge recently failed. The result was some quite 'ripe' food which has left a fridge that is somewhat odorous, to say the least.

The fridge has been fixed and now functions brilliantly.

I have tried all sorts of cleaners, mainly antibacterial cleaners but the smell comes back.

What does the gathered gentry suggest as a solution.

It is driving me nuts!

Thanks.

Tony.

It's a top loader, two compartments. The tops are always open unless the fridge is on and I have tried two different types of anti bacterial spray!

Its a pain!

I tried washing up liquid and hot water today. It was great for a few hopurs then just as bad!

Any advice greatly welcomed.

Tony.

The crew says she would use Sodium Bicarbonate . Two teaspoons in a small bowl of warm water

Have you got a drain in the bottom of the fridge? If so, there may be putrid fluid in the 'u-bend' in which bacteria are multiplying. You could try a weak solution of Jeyes fluid or bleach, left overnight and flushed through with lots of nearly-boiling water.

Bleach it. When dry - lemon juice and rinse then put a few spoons of tea on a saucer in there. The tea absorbs odours.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that!

I'll try.

Might also bleach it! Bleach seems to be sufficiently environmentally abhorred that it's probably effective!

And a lemon and sodium bicarb rinse afterwards.

Thanks all.

Tony.

Wipe the inside off the fridge down with vanilla essence and put some bicarbonate of soda in a small bowl in the fridge , bicarbonate will absorb the smell ,vanilla essence will make it smell nice :)

There is a small pipe in the fridge that drains off any melted water onto the top of the compressor motor where it evaporates with the heat. Wipe and sterilize the top of the motor, and blow air through the drain pipe and fill with bleach........

Not always. HR do not provide any drain from the fridge to avoid that smell problem. They do provide a raised platform in the base to keep stuff out of the condensate though.

Hate to say this, but from bitter experience don't rely on any of the above to work. I hope you're luckier than me, but in my experience (2 events) nothing has even begun to shift the smell in a well stinky fridge. It seems to me that the smell becomes ingrained into the plastic and washing it off isn't addressing the problem at all, you just end up with a very clean fridge made of very smelly plastic. If so be prepared to live with it or its the deep six I'm afraid.
