Ok immase the fatal error of wearing my deck shoes without socks the other day and now they're smelly to wear even with socks.

If I leave them soaking in salt water is that likely to kill of the smelly bacteria? Anyone tried it?

My father once wore his deck shoes without socks for a few days at the start of a family caravan holiday. By day three they’d been banned from the car and travelled the rest of the way round Scotland strapped to the handles on the rear of the caravan. Despite several hundred miles of airing, not to mention lots of rain, they remained as determinedly smelly as before and were ceremonially burnt on the last night of the holiday. I regret that it’s likely that the OPs shoes will face a similar future......

Available from supermarkets and pharmacies throughout the land

It's the Gore-tex ones that pong if you wear them without socks. I bought an expensive pair of Dubarrys and they ended up being relegated to the anchor locker they smelt so bad.

Lesson being buy cheap shoes if you like to wear them without socks.

Here are two remedies that work for me:
- Elite Sportz foot spray with peppermint and tea tree oil. It lasts for years and is effective. Find it on Amazon. You can spray shoes and if you really need maximum odour control, feet as well.
- A boot/shoe drier with ozone generator. The combination of heat and ozone eliminates smell. Mains powered and about the size of a shoe box so most practical at home. Twenty minutes and the job's done. Also on Amazon. Search for Weyn shoe dryer
