Or look at a Kingfisher K20. Usually a few for sale on www.KYOA.org.uk and often available for very little money.
One of two finishers on the last Atlantic Jester Challenge, so it will take you anywhere you will want to go.

If 19ft is enough, don't bother with all the old lumps that won't sail to windward.
A Prelude bilge keeler is a respectable performer, from a good designer with boats around from less than £1000.

I recommend the Vivacity 20, (same as the Alacrity) Had one for several years, paid £1500 for a tatty one, did it up and explored almost every creek in the Thames Estuary. Very suitable, can get up most creeks. I certaintly cannot get as far with my current fin keeler.
I can honestly say we used this small boat more than our current boat and went up more creeks.

People, I've gotta say a big thanks for all the advice and taking time to add some links.

I am a touch concerned how big the bar bill may become if I buy any of them since it appears I may owe you all a pint at this rate. :)

I'll have a trawl through the links and see what floats my boat (another dodgy pun)

Snap

I had a snapdragon 23 with lifting keel/plate. Did weekends with wife+3 kids. Sailed ok even with old baggy sails and we had an outboard in a homemade well. Happy days. Brilliant fun great value and bombproof

Only one boat ? Hurley 22 ??

Sorry but there are loads of boats out there for 2K and under ... even boats asking anything up to 3K ... offers at times accepted at 2K ...

A look at Boats and Outboards online and use 2K as a filter ... even local advert papers, Exchange & Mart ... Freeads ... there's enough out there to keep anyone busy for ages ...

Personally for 2K - I would go for the Snap 23 ... slightly bigger than most quoted here, has large cockpit that 3 can be in and still have plenty room to handle sheets / sails etc. Most have inboard engines with odd ones with outboard on transom ... They may be 70's builds, but so are most of the others quoted in this thread ...

May even be lucky to pick up a little Westerly 22 ... Windrush etc. - not unknown for odd ones to go for a song ...

I suggest to OP to look through online sales pages using up to 3K as a filter, look round a few of the backwater boat yards where often little gems are hiding and found, scour the local papers ads etc.

Well chaps, i've looked at a trusty Corribee which I have to agree does remind me of an old-school prison cell inside but quite charming in a funny kind of way.

It's fairly spartanly equipped. Burner/VHF. and needs a 4-5hp long shaft o/b but the standing rigging is good and the sails are also good.

For significantly below £1k. Only drawback is it's a fin-keel which is not ideal for an east coast newbie.

oooo decisions decisions. Perhaps a touch too small inside.

You could also consider a Seal 22,centreboard,18" draft with board up,outboard in a well,9.9hp ample power. Very good sailer and close winded if racing; between £2and £3k ,with trailer. Roomy enough down below.Usually a furling genoa.Good Seal and Parker Association for tips if needed. Parker yachts now no more unfortunately but their boats are good value too, based upon the Seals I believe."GeoffatStanpit" of these forums is expert on these .ianat182

Thanks Ian - fame at last! I used to have a Seal 22 - the Sinbad version with conventional rig rather than the unusual standard 22 "dinghy rig" . Very comfortable. Once weekended with five up! Now I have a Parker 21 - more fun to sail but wouldn't want more than 2 up.

Read all about them at www.parkerseal.org.uk

Thanks for posting all those pics of your Prelude, I owned one for several years when I was a member of The Poole Yacht Club my wife and I used to race it in class 3b with some good results perhaps members of the club about eight or nine years ago will remember "Kymo" if they should by chance read this it would be nice to get in touch, and I agree with Lakesailor that the Prelude was one of the nicest small boats that I have ever owned

Seconded - I picked up a Hurley 20 for £600 a few years ago and it was a great little performer once I'd added a £200 outboard. You might even find a roughish H22 for £2K if you're prepared to do some work. There was one going in Wales last year for £1,875 with an outboard.

Good luck.

Corribee could/should be considered - they may be small inside but look at what Nathan has managed to do with his (Kudu)...

Having said that I love the boat I have - and as someone else said she is also "19' and from a good designer" :D - and way below your budget when I bought her at the beginning of this year (£950 including trailer, outboard and sails..)

May I recommend to you (my) Fantasie 19 designed by Rober Tucker:

don;t be scared off by the wood and get yourself a proven Tucker designed sea boat - 2ft 9inches draught -triple keel great sailer - the orignal JOG boat -relatively massive below 4 good berths - handy flush deck - sansom post -

the fabulous Debutante -

there is a guy on here with one called Sixpence with a really fab interior -

class history includes transatlantics, Tristram Jones and a lake in the Andes and strange goings on in the carribbean (Sea Dart ended up near Chicago)

ideal for the east coast and happy to exist on a drying mooring - you can sail like a dinghy and when berthed in Burnham Marina will be prettiest boat in there -

there was one around on the Blackwater for sale - happy days for someone -

hope I haven't overdone the enthuisiasm

heres mine in Portsmouth harbour -
