after rebuild,my merc sailpower now uprated to 5hp,courtesy of a mariner head transplant, still was a poor runner.eventually found that in our english monsoon season(aka summer)the culprit was the breather screw on the fuelcap, even when tightened, allowing small, but significant drops of water into the mix..donning sterile gloves i rushed the patient into theatre/garden shed, hooked up the bypass, and changed to remote tank system,..wow,perfect running ..and a heck of a cruising range.often wonder if anyone ever had to refuel the old integral tank at sea in heavy weather...they are useless in anything over 3hp..

I've got an american fuel can pourer which I screw onto my delivery tank when I refuel at sea. It works much like the filler at all garages. When you start pouring nothing happens until it is fully inserted into the receiving tank. When the receiving tank is full the pourer switches off.

It works extremely well, though it does take a little longer to fill the tank. I haven't spilt a drop of petrol since I got it.

Where did you get the "american fuel can pourer" from? America? which store?

I have a johnson 4hp with an integral tank and I have done some refilling at sea and it is not very comfortable or easy. I have been looking for a way to make this a bit easier and safer.

How did you do the conversion to an external tank? Does your outboard have a fuel pump? I understood that the small outboard with integral tanks relied on gravity for getting the fuel out of the tank and into the engine?

I can't remember the manufacturers name but I got it from Bristol Boat Centre (Tel 01225 872032). To be honest I think it was one that they were trying to get rid of but it has proved to be invaluable. It cost about £12.

They might be able to help.

Try a non spill fuel filler valve as used in the forestry industry for filling chain saws. You just fit the valve to the can, turn it upside down and drop it into the tank filler hole. The flow stops when full.
