small offshore long keel cruisers

At the risk of repeating debates of old I'd like some advive on small, offshore long keel cruisers.
I like the idea of a GRP folkboat, with a bit of extra space. I want to be able to sail singlehanded, and also to be able to sail around Britain, down to the med, and in my dreams far offshore, although I need to build up experience.

Why a long keeler??

My lad has a Westerly Tiger, 25ft 1969ish, a cracking boat to sail. Fast for her length (faster than those mentioned) , built well. plenty of room and cheap(ish) to buy as they are oldish. Get one with a replacement engine as that will be the major cost of any upgade, just like on those boat mentioned .

Good Luck

having decided on your hull shape you only really need to decide on comfort. the halcyon gives partial headroom 6 foot and seems to be well regarded.

the hurley 27 is another proven boat worth looking at if you can find a well appointed example. slightly more headroom and bigger cockpit.
tim bennet's rather stark advice hit a nerve with me but worth taking note of, to add, re-upholstery is likely to be upwards of £1500

That was the point I was trying to make earlier, we have more headroom than a standard Halcyon 27. The previous owner gutted the boat, and refitted her for trans-Atlantic cruising. To set the headroom they filled the bilges with old yellow pages till they had the right headroom, then put in a new floor at that level.

Thus old boats can be very different to what you think they are.

I would also recommend an Itchen Ferry 25’ not a popular choice but a cracking little boat
Long keel
built like a brick out-house as they say
Sleeps 4 in 2 berths
Separate heads
Good galley
6’ headroom in saloon
Ridiculous amounts of storage for a 25 footer (probably more useable storage than our current 34’ BR)
5 large lockers in the cockpit.

We had one as our first boat and it kept us safe despite our best attempts and we once had 9 people on board at one time with no problems (was a tad crowded when we served lunch, lol). Flipper of this parish has our one now. :)
