Slipway around Penton Hook

Apologies, this has nothing to do with the EA or Lock-keepers /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm going to try and slip my boat at the weekend, I was planning on using the slipway at Penton Hook Marina unless anyone has any better advice for a cheaper/straighter slip in that vicinity.

The boat is 27' and over two and a half tonnes, so needs to be a pretty substantial slipway /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Also if anyone here has taken their boat down to the solent on a trailer, I would appreciate advice on a good location to launch/recover (I have searched the Mobo forum, and there is some good stuff there, but the search facilities aren't quite what they once were)

I'd stick with Penton Hook for a boat of that size, i used the public slip at Lymington YC for a similar size boat with no problems, good location for Yarmouth, Alum bay etc..

IMHO the best slip in the Solent for a big boat is at Hamble Point. Its not cheap, but it is well maintained and nice and wide.

Launching is easy at any state of tide, but recovery can be difficult if the tide is running quick or you have high winds. (recover at slack high water to avoid problems).

The other slip to consider is at Hythe Marina, good slip but parking can be difficult due to jet ski users parking their tiny trailers in the few big trailer bays.

I am going to try the slip at Mercury Marina this weekend, but I have not heard good things about it.

Lordy, you take me back. I moored at Hamble Point back in the 1960s and 1970s when it was Fairey Yacht Harbours and run by Peter Twiss, those that don't know him, Google him.

I would because I delivered a boat to Port Hamble a couple of years back. If you remember Mike Windsor who ran The Bugle for many years, he is in his late 70s now and phones me regular, he lives in Devon.
