slack rigging

Note that the rig may be undergoing countless stress cycling when it is not being sailed.

A shroud failed in fatigue on my Hobie 16 when it was parked on shore. The mast rotates on this boat and wind was enough to cause it to turn repeatedly.

On my website there is a case history of two failures of a forestay on a boat that was kept on a mooring in a wave affected bay.
My Squib has had a strand failure on the mooring, as has a couple of other Squibs. their rigging is normally fairly slack & does flap a bit in the waves with mast sway. I am not aware of any larger boats on our moorings suffering. But their rig is tighter

As you can read on the website the man with the forestay failures slackened his rig off to avoid permanently bending the mast.
