Skipper need to be fined

?

Oh I’ve missed the idiots posting on here. Is it sponsored by the Daily Mail now ???

I entered the Hamble this weekend in a massive 50 foot flybridge with twin 12 litre 715hp engines capable of chucking it down the track at over 30 knots.

But I throttled back early so as to join the stream of boats. We’d been at tickover doing 6 knots for probably 5 minutes before we passed the channel 68 6 knot dolphin.

Small ribs we flying past us and as we got closer to Hamble point yachts decided to drop sails and ready themselves in various positions and attitudes to the flow of traffic but no bother. It was a lovely day so chill pills were freely available .

being a longer, sorry massive boat at 6 knots we produce not a ripple. Shorter craft have exceeded their hull speed and produce quite a wake. I noticed that whist overnighting at Warsash. But hey - it’s the Hamble and actually surprisingly quiet for a BH weekend.

leaving the Hamble it was actually a rib that did the flat out Southampton Water downstream handbrake turn into the Hamble move.

One of the great things about bigger boats is their owners are accountable. Easy to track down, usually but not always qualified, people of means and a fixed address should you wish to prosecute and very difficult for them to escape. Try catching a 50 knot anonymous jet ski who doesn’t want to be caught…..

Oh, the big fella’s going to have insurance as well - good luck with the smaller craft.

There’s good & bad across the spectrum. I see it every year. If you don’t like the Hamble moor elsewhere, there’s loads of choice and I guarantee it will be cheaper by probably 30%.

Are those folk demanding only small boats use the Hamble the same people trying to ban paddle boards and sailing dinghies tacking across the river in groups or alone?

So kind of small but not too small….

?

Hey, have a great season ?

Henry ❤️

As ever you completely miss the point

That depends, how wealthy are they? Impossible to make a decision on whether they should be banned without knowing that. Big motorboats are much easier... ;)

Boaters and yotties want the Great British public to care that they now have to pay VAT on their vessels....but then show disdain for gin palace owners...

I think the complainant seemed more concerned with how many storeys the boats have than their length?

Afraid I have to agree with Henry guys.?

We used to have a 50ft F/B based at Swanwick which would make 6kts at idle.

Coming down (or up) river the only sensible thing was to slip it into neutral and coast for a while.
Especially on a busy morning with lots of yachts charging out into the river from the lower river marinas.

Sometimes it was slightly annoying when a ‘sudden charge’ from the marina to get out in front of you slows to a crawl.
Especially whilst if it was a yacht with focus on the ‘spaghetti‘ of sheets and halyards with no one on ‘look-out’ duty.?

But hey I ‘sail‘ too and know what they are trying to do……….so no worries!?

I‘ve always been very aware that my 22 tons of boat made a big hole in the water.
And some big waves in that transition from gliding like a duck to planning.

I’d certainly never dream of ‘opening-up’ near any other boats leaving a speed limited channel.
Or coming in ‘hot’ to a 6 kt marker!

I believe we all have the responsibility to behave responsibly…….. and enjoy our hobby. ?

We need to observe and understand what others are doing, whatever craft they are in.

But (personally) I didn’t start boating to become a water policeman.

I am just asking for some people to calm down, drive sensibly when around others (particularly in peak busy times) and stick to basic rules, think of others as it’s not all about you, what on earth is wrong with that FFS, from a fly bridge owner!?

Have you given up the Axopar, Paul?

I thought you wanted someone to be fined. Isnt that what you said ?

I suppose it’s like driving on the roads, you get plonkers on bikes and in big and small cars from time to time, breaking the rules, they too can kill. No good stressing yourself out.

The majority of large FB MY I have observed try very hard to obey the rules of the road and go out of their way so as not to cause problems to SY, I know I do, just common courtesy. MY no different to SY regardless of size and expense.

I could moan having to repair my MY twice in a couple of years due to SY’s hitting me whilst parked in the marina - life is too short, thank goodness their insurance picked up the tab.

You never know their circumstances, but likely some are just being thoughtless. So a rant every now and then I suppose does no harm! Plenty of room out there for us all to play and enjoy our leisure sport, we don’t own the water!
