Hi I am trying to help a friend to find some information on the Skipper dingies from past times, but arent having much joy, any of you got any leads, would appreciate any info.
Thanks, Eamonn.

The skipper dingy was made in 12 and 14ft and probably bigger.
Apparantly there was some info on them on the internet a while back, but he cant find anything now.
The one he bought is 12ft and the focile has a removable lid/cover.

I remember there were two rather neat Skipper dinghys built in the '70's - they were 12' or 14', sloop rig, and I think both had an interesting 'bow cockpit' forward of the mast, under the jib.

Just looked them up in my Sailing Boats of the World book - designed by Peter Milne in 1968, built by Richmond Marine, Portsmouth yardstick no 116, cost new in the mid 70's GBP 200 and 250 respectively.....

Hi I think they were built by Bellway marine who also buillt the Fusion dinghy and Iluision both designed by Joe Richards.
I don't know who designed the Skippers but I believe they built a
14ft and 16ft model.
Tony

I was bidding on one on eBay a while ago.

Thanks bajan, what my friend is after is a diagram of the rigging and sails, and any other available info.
BTW can you look up your book to see does it give any refference to the Hummingbird 30 of 1982 vintage, which was built in the modified mould of the Elizabethan 30.
Thanks again, Eamonn

Re: Skipper dinghy

Hello Eamonn,

My 'Sailing Boats of the World' hasnt got any line drawings of the Skippers, but it does have some specifications :

12' : 12' x 11' LWL x 4'9" beam x 145 lbs displacement
Sail area 65 sq ft, mast height 12' 11", over 2,000 were built.

14' : 14' x 13' LWL x 4' 11" beam x 185 lbs displacement
Sail area 70 sq ft, mast height 12' 11" still.

Maybe the photo posted by Lakesailor above might be enough re a sail plan?
I know that I have a report somewhere re a YW rally report of a bunch of dinghies in the early 1970's, when YW still liked small craft - I shall try to find it.

This book is from 1974, hence a bit too early for your Hummingbird. Have just had a look for this book on Amazon - 2nd hand copies are going for horrendous prices (between 18 - 54 GBP) ! Have a look at http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0220666504/ref=dp_olp_1/202-7876554-5549459

It is a very good reference book though. When it was first published it cost GBP 7.50.....

Just had a look at a sistership of your Hummingbird at http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/b...=50289&url=

They are very fine vessels for sure!

My father had a 14ft version which is what I learnt to sail on.

Very stable - good for learning, but a good performance as well - beat the local mirrors and Pacers etc. Never capsized her, although came close a couple of times. Pretty hard to do.

Ours was a Gunter rig, but sloop also available. Sailed perfectly well with main alone for real new sailing. Also used her for fishing - under power was fine (except water coming up the dagger board case). Rowing was a pig - best using the dagger and rudder as well.

The only issues we had was that being double skinned , if (ie when!) water got in the middle there was nowhere for it to go. We put a hole into the aft locker (big by the way) and emptied it out that way. Ohter than that we used it from a stony beach and had to put a bit more glass on the hull as it was getting a bit worn down!

The 17 foot was more of a cruising version and had a cuddy. Not sure if it was self draining.

Certainly recommend the 14 ft.
