Skin Fitting

Hi,

I have a new skin fitting to install for raw water intake for new engine - it has a small ' lug' which would prevent it sitting tightly agsinst the hull - is this a manufacturing defect or am I meant to form a recess in the hull to accomodate it?

The lug is intended to prevent the whole fitting from spinning as you tighten the nut. You can either grind a slot in your hull or grind out the lug.

I think the idea is to grind out a small indentation in the hole to compliment the small lug , this will allow the fitting to fit flush with the hull and provides a fixing point to stop the fitting turning as you tighten the nut

If you grind off the lug you will need a step wrench, or a substitute, to hold the fitting while you tighten the hut

If there's a lug on the outside there's usually no lugs on the inside so no way to grip it if you grind it off

Assuming you are going to retain the lug, the best procedure is to assemble the whole seacock in the hole, so as to find out the orientation you want the lug to be in, so as to have the lever in the most suitable position for opening and closing, (I hope that makes sense).
Mark where the lug is to be located, then drill a hole whose diameter is the same as the thickness of the lug, at a distance of one diameter from the edge of the aperture. A file or jigsaw can be used to turn it into a slot. It should be sealed with epoxy to prevent water entering the layup.
