(If I'm repeating myself please put it down to being brain-dead from the unexpected sunshine.) /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My Log/Temp has three relevant components: transducer (paddlewheel+thermocouple), databox and instrument.

The instrument is a Simrad IS11 and is now gracefully declining.

The databox (an excellent NMEA multiplexer if you need one) is fine.

The transducer must be OK because the databox correctly passes on speed/temperature data via NMEA to my computer.

I've got hold of a Simrad IS12 instrument which has 5 connectors and the transducer is also five-wire; the colours don't quite match.

Q1. Can my old transducer be wired directly into the IS12 instrument; if so, what is the colour code?

Q2. If this isn't possible can anyone recommend a cheap display of speed and temperature which will use the existing NMEA data?

Thanks - in hope.

A1 you almost certainly can, i had a IS12 with 5 wires and the cockpit display went wrong, I replaced it with a Raymarine unit and left the same speed and temp sensor in after receving advise that these speed and temperature sensors are all outsourced to another company anyway so tend to work across a wide range of insturments and makes. PS PM me if you want my old IS12 on which the Depth is gone ,but the speed was OK.

I think you'll find the IS12 operates differently. If you wire your existing transducer directly to an IS12 display, you'll lose the ability to output NMEA speed info to your computer from the databox.

IS11 spares are available, or alternative displays which will work on the IS11 databox. The people to talk to are Tinley Electronics.

Currently one available on EBay here

I have a manual ot home will look it un and post info tomorrow.

You could also connect the signals and ground to both but the IS12 and the databox, taking the supply (normally red from only one unit.

Can confirm reansducer same as raymarine as raymarine was fitted to my previous boat which I replaced with simrad IS11.

I've tried connecting the transducer directly (and only) to the IS 12 instrument but am a bit nervous since, apart from the fairly obvious red to red, I'm worried that an incorrect wiring would damage the instrument .

The colours are different but I've terminated the lead with spade clips so can easily try permutations.

If I knew which two IS12 terminals "belong" to the temperature sensor it would be a great start.

Simrad are unhelpful and clearly aren't prepared to take the risk of suggesting colour combinations in case all goes wrong - can't say I blame them.

Thanks for the ebay tip - I think I could get a NMEA repeater for about the same and get better vfm. Further info very gratefully received.

eBay tip...

The eBay tip was a US seller with $100 reserve and $50 shipping, plus duty & VAT in UK. You might also take a look at this UK eBay seller who, strangely, is the same as the Tinley Electronics link I posted earlier.

Re: eBay tip...

Thanks again. MarineElectronics are in Wareham (they've just mended my autohelm). Tinley is in Lymington. I've put this problem on the back burner for the moment. I'm keeping a sharp lookout on ebay.

New Dataline displays are now available from www.stowemarine.com that work on all Databoxes.

Your existing Stowe paddlewheel sensor could be used with the IS 12, provided there is enough calibration range. The colours should connect as follows:

Stowe IS12
Red Red
Black Black
Blue Green
White White
Yellow Yellow
