i have a simpson lawrence powermate windlass, i know it is an old one but it will not stop the chain going out when the weight comes on, the electrics are fine as it hauls in and also pays out, does anybody have any literature on this or an old one for spares ,or know who can supply spares for older model windlass, i think it maybe that the clutch is slipping, so need a bit of technical advice before attacking it.

Not quite sure here but does it not have a big nut on the outside that holds the Gypsy in place? If so the tighter it is the higher the clutch rating. Simple as that?
Certainly true of later models anyway....

Lewmar now supply the Simpson-Lawrence winch range, and do carry spares, but I don't know if they'll have spares for very old stuff.

John McMaster, formerly of Lewmar Scotland, branched off to form his own Lewmar spares company, called SL Spares. He makes SL toilet spares and also used to be able to supply redundant windlass spares.

You can contact John on 0141 589 6287 or at sl.spares@ntlworld.com.

This is probably not the answer you want but if the windlass is otherwise OK why don't you just get yourself a chain hook, fit a length of nylon rope and take all the load on your mooring cleat, sampson post or whatever? Most windlass manufacturers recommend this anyway rather than taking the load on the windlass resulting possibly in a bent shaft.

Try Russel simpson marine Newhaven they may still have contacts etc for bits.
Speak with Aarun Simpson(or russel never quite sure which) they are always very helpful
