A friend has asked me if I know of a simple hand winch capable of lifting 100kg but not silly money. I don't but I thought I'd raise it with the experts in this parish

Thanks

Trailer winch might do it, but won't be 'approved' for it.
The problem with hand winches is 'safe' lowering, it would be easy to lose control of a simple winch.
You can get electric winches to go on a scaffold quite cheaply. This gives you controlled lowering.

Dutton-Lainson do braked winches which can safely lower as well as raise. They are used in the Anderson 22 and Hunter 490, for example, to raise and lower the keels. Not easy to get hold of in the UK, though, and overkill for the job in hand.

For that application I’d definitely use a trailer winch, probably with a strap rather than a wire rope just because it feels a little more homely. Available fairly cheaply on eBay.

It's for to raise and lower a bed in a big van he's kitting out as a long term camper.

That is one very heavy bed! What is it made from? If it's a matter of raising the bed to ceiling height to clear living space in the van, then a lightweight frame should be adequate and would weigh a lot less than 100kg. I agree with the pulleys suggestion.

100kg?
Is the bed to be occupied while lifting?
:ROFLMAO: That was my thought as well.

Matt - Does he want to lift all four corners to the roof and be suspended there when the van is on the move
or is the bed to be hinged along one side and raised like a drawbridge? Which is the more common way.
If it is hinged then a lightweight pulley from B&Q at the two lifting corners would do a job. It could even be manhandled up and clipped in position.
