A friend has asked me if I know of a simple hand winch capable of lifting 100kg but not silly money. I don't but I thought I'd raise it with the experts in this parish
Thanks

Loads on ebay for twenty/thirty quid. , well worth replacing the steel wire rope for dyneema. It's for to raise and lower a bed in a big van he's kitting out as a long term camper.
Dutton-Lainson do braked winches which can safely lower as well as raise. They are used in the Anderson 22 and Hunter 490, for example, to raise and lower the keels. Not easy to get hold of in the UK, though, and overkill for the job in hand.Trailer winch might do it, but won't be 'approved' for it.
The problem with hand winches is 'safe' lowering, it would be easy to lose control of a simple winch.
You can get electric winches to go on a scaffold quite cheaply. This gives you controlled lowering.

Most fold-down beds use spring loaded hinge mechanisms rather than winches or tackles. See, for example, https://www.leevalley.com/en-gb/sho.../41277-spring-box-hardware-for-fold-down-beds. I just used a Google search "spring loaded hinge for drop down bed"It's for to raise and lower a bed in a big van he's kitting out as a long term camper.
