Simple GPS Watch

Just stumbled across this whilst looking for something entirely different and was reminded of this thread:
http://www.karrimor.com/karrimor-gps-hrm-watch-44-765274
Claims to do what is required and seems to be £75 end-of-line both on the karrimor site and the running shop site I was looking at.

I'd ask for recommendations for earphones which don't fall out (which is what I was actually looking for) but that would doubtless be a lounge topic....

From the Garmin Forerunner page

For typical use (with GPS on 30 minutes per day), the battery life is 10 days. If used continuously with GPS, the battery life is 5 hours.

So. Turn on GPS, wait for a fix, turn off. What's convenient about that?

Garmin Foretrex 401 (or 301 if you don't need the compass). Can be found on Amazon and eBay. Does GPS, time (from GPS, therefore accurate), compass (401 model only) and waypoints. No maps. It's fantastically huge and clunky for a wristwatch - some strap it to their upper arm or carry it 'round the neck instead. Uses standard AAA batteries (thus the size), so no big deal when they run out at a bad time (no pun intended).

These have a great reputation amongst soldierly folk. Whilst you shouldn't listen to those guys when they tell you to declare war on this or that country, they're usually worth listening to when it comes to field-tested outdoor kit.

Works for me, mainly for range/bearing to next waypoint, but also can display lat/long.

I have a Garmin Quatix wristwatch as well, which I use as backup to the Sony Xperia tablet that I use for a plotter. Got it on eBay for a little under £200, very happy with it. I especially like that it's rechargable; as a normal watch, the charge runs for weeks, but if the GPS is active, it'll only manage about 9 hours.

However, it charges off of a USB socket, and charges up fully from the boat's domestic battery within an hour or so. Much easier to charge than the tablet :)
