Just got a mailspeed comic through the post and they are advertising a Silva DSC enabled radio for £200+
If you spend another£100+ on an ariel you get navtex reception on it as well and it says something about built in GPS
I'm sorry if I appear a little dim but does this mean that it doesn't need to be wired up to an external GPS unit and it will do the weather - sort of 3 in 1?

Ive had the S15 since they 1st came out.
It is good although the instructions are cra* and Silvas after sales service is as good as useless and the answers they gave re waiting times were not true.
Its away for repair at the moment due to a fault with the Navtext Ariel. which was faulty from day one and they could not replace for 6 weeks and the screw on the Ariel started to rust after one week, looks like chromed steel, so what quality the other components are is questionable.
The connections are easy and it interfaces to the MLR GPS and Seatalk bus fine.
I understand that they have now upgraded the software so the DSC alarms can be switched off at night.
Another thing to bear in mind is the size of the Navtext Ariel it must be at least 18" long and on the pushpit looks like an inviting boarding handle.

Re: Tonys\'

I had mine with full milk and a coating of double cream (SHMBO is away this week visiting our daughters).
Note to me: I must remember to take the rubbish to the dump before she returns.

I've got the S15 set - it proves the old adage, that you get what you pay for.

Yes it does do basic GPS stuff, and Navtex with the right antennae, on top of being a simple radio with DSC.

However, its only good if you are short of either space or dosh, IMHO.

Its a pain in the butt to navigate around the functions, even just to set up a dual scan between two channels. I have subsequently bought a ICS Nav 6+ which is the mutt's nuts as a Navtex and Instrument repeater display, complete with log.

I sold the Silva Navtex antenna on ybw, and plan to change the VHF/DSC too, when I can justify the additional expense. Plan to shop around at LIBS.

For the avoidance of doubt, I think it's crap.

Re: Bugger

Don't let me alone put you off - I am sure there are others who think its great. As I said before, you get what you pay for.

You are always welcome to come for a live demo - there is still talk of a pre-Christmas night away (Note to self - speak with Jimi, Para etc) - I am sure your presence would make it all the more enjoyable !

Re: Bugger

We have one. Bought it because it was cheap and waterproof. You may have the wrong end of the stick about the GPS side of the set. There is no GPS receiver in the Silva set so you will have to hard wire it to an external GPS. Ours is currently back with Silva to be replaced. It sent an acknowledgement to an urgency call in the summer; which that class of set is not supposed to be able to do. Caused a certain amount of excitement at Portland Coastguard. Apparently this and several other problems are being fixed in the new software. We will see.

As a basic VHF and Navtex it works fine, BUT buttons are too small, alarms are too loud, and menus are too complicated. Instructions look like they were translated from Finish to English in China. Can't recommend it and wish I had saved up for a better one.
