Is silicone grease any good in wheel bearings e.g. boat trailer and launching trolley wheel bearings which are frequently immersed?

I have used silicon grease for many years in High Vacuum Systems and Furnaces. I have always looked on it as a water dispersing and electrical insulation grease and for lubricating seals but I am pretty sure its not all that good as a high pressure lubricant for wheel bearings.

I don't think that's what he means by "high pressure" - the pressure on the lubricant film is high because the wheel bearing is usually under transverse load and the weight of the object supported on the wheel is being applied through a small mating surface. With the wrong characteristics of lubricant, the film will break around the point of contact resulting in unlubricated metal to metal contact.

Wrong wording

Should grease in wheel bearings be at high pressure?
I thought that these needed to be lightly greased to avoid overheating

Sorry, I did not mean that the grease was at high pressure, what I meant was that the grease has to withstand high pressure loads such as found in bearings. The high pressure being at the point of load between the balls and the bearing track.

Those last 2 replies make sense
Thanks
Had never occurred to me before

What i have noticed is that some silicon grease seems to break down after a short period
In particular the spray on stuff
Is that correct?

Silicon on or even near boats is hazard, silicon will stick to almost anything, but nothing will stick to silicon.

That means paint won't stick if there is the slightest trace of it, ans stays on for a long time even outside exposed to the elements.

It also not at all easy to remove.

Generally, most people with boats avoid it even being stored on board let alone used. Total ban on our boat.

Good luck and fair winds. :)
