I use a variation on that. I drill with a 9mm bit up the exit hole (!) until drill bit strikes uncured stuff and use as per normal with the gun. Don’t use one of your posh Dormer bits…

Same except I’m not sure about Dormer drill bits being ‘posh’!

PS You can pick the bits of Sikaflex off the drill bit or wipe it with acetone before it sets.

What are 'Dormer' drill bits?

Rather than acetone - turps is cheaper.

But if its a drill bit, the Sika will provide corrosion protection and the Sika will abrade as soon as you use it in earnest.

True re the abrasion.

Dormer is a UK drill and tool maker. They have a good reputation and I was being slightly tongue in cheek over my ‘posh’ comment.

A technique I recently learnt of is to squeeze out about 15mm of sealant and leave it (still attached to the cartridge) until it sets and forms a bung.

Next time you want to use it simply pull this bung off.

It seems to work ok in the short term but I haven't been trying it for long enough to know if it works long term.

I find that leaving the plastic nozzle in place and full then making a good seal all around the plastic nozzle with self amalgamating tape works well. Eventually the sikaflex in the nozzle goes hard but most often it can be unscrewed and a new nozzle used without having to drill into the tube. The hard sika in the first nozzle usually comes out as a single piece once it has set. It’s god stuff but very expensive so makes sense to use it as long as it’s really soft.

The nail pushed into the nozzle works better. The idea is that the nail displaces the fluid sealant before it is exposed to air bearing moisture.
