About 5mm. What could I use , any suggestions. To float on top of the diesel.

If you cannot source suitable 'floaty bits' ..... then why not try the painted tape idea :
Length of tape with Yellow / Black diagonal sections or lines on ... placed behind a clear sight tube. The diesel / water refracts the lines and makes them appear straight.
Most ships sight tubes use this method.
