can I fit a largish outboard on a Shrimper ie 6-9hp and does any one have a list of motors that will fit in the fairly tight space provided. this is the older pre raised coachroof model. thanks

I had a Shrimper for some years and fitted an 8hp Yamaha quite neatly in the well.

I did leave it there most of the season though - very heavy!

Also it was a short shaft - easier to manage.

I recommend you go only forward slowly though - definitely NOT astern!

New Shrimper o/b models come with a Mariner I think. I know they are rated up to 8hp but normally come with a 5. Most of the Shrimpers in my local waters have a 5hp. I've just put a new Mercury 5hp four stroke. It does a fine job. It got me back against a F6 and 2 knot tide OK - not fast but very reassuring.

I bought a 1997 Mariner 5 hp for my 1989 Shrimper and found that it was too high to allow the tiller to pass comfortably over the top. My solution was to remove the filler cap on the integral tank and tape over the hole - it means I cannot use the integral tank and indeed have taken that out too. An alternative might have been to realign the tiller.

So be warned - old Shrimpers were made for old Mariner 5s but the new Mariner 5 is obviously a different size!
