So should ensign's be lowered in fog the same as at night? (doesn't worry me as I leave mine up at night anyway)

I thought that was the reason for the discussion? I for one haven't a clue what you should do in fog! I'm normally to busy worrying about the safety of the boat and crew and making the correct sound signals to think about what I should do with the flags (washing) that I'm flying.
I hate to admit this, but having just left a marina [in fog] - tooting every couple of minutes, I have been known to leave the fenders over the side. This misdameour was quickly pointed out to me by a "bretton cap" in a 35' [silent] boat that appeared out of nowhere on my portside!!!!
I have to admit I love this type of thread ~ it's what keeps me coming back here year-after-year<smile>.
Actually, I'm with you as an exponent of "course sailing".
