Should I get rid of all this rope?

Our lazarette, which leaks, is stuffed full of crap, including this great big pile of rope. Actually it's two great big piles of rope. I'm not sure whether to chuck it out or not.

It's 25mm, is around 30-40m in length and it floats. It is really cumbersome to use and too thick to tie round cleats. It takes up loads of room in the lazarette and the space could be better used for other stuff. In three years I haven't yet used this rope. I have 100m of much stronger, thinner 15mm line that I use for my second anchor and I'm thinking of buying more warps too.

If I get rid of this am I going to find I'll need it tomorrow? Am I stupid to get rid of such a large amount of rope that could be used in an emergency? Any idea what it's for? I'm guessing the previous owner nicked it from a cruise liner.

I cannot see a need for 25mm as mooring warps for your boat, so I suggest you put it in the next boat jumble in the marina. Someone will buy it.

The previous owner probably acquired it when someone posted a message similar to yours. It looks good for mooring lines and/or a strops for a swinging mooring. Or perhaps your man envisaged needing to stream warps to stop him going too fast. But if you haven't needed it yet and cannot think when you would need it then you'd be better off advertising it on eBay.

Perhaps it was kept for running in bad weather, towing warps?
If you do decide to ditch it, find the poorest looking local fishing boat you can and make a gift of it to her skipper, he might be glad of it.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, I figured a present to a fisherman would be the right thing to do. I wouldn't get much more than a fiver at a boat jumble.

It did occur to me that they were for trailing in following seas. However I'm thinking of either making an a sea anchor or will use all the other lines scattered around the boat. This pile just seems like over-kill.

I did exactly that Demonboy, just bent mooring warps together and streamed them when running, worked a treat (long keel). Some poor old Turk could probably use that as a ground rope. (and you might end up eating fresh fish next time he lands a catch).. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's polypropylene so has poor UV resistance and is not very durable. Personally I wouldn't use it for anything but, as you suggest, a fisherman may appreciate it.

Agree not much use to tow as it floats. Could be useful towrope though. Go and breakdown and try it.

Along with a lot of others I have trouble parting with ropes so would agonise over this and then find a place in the shed where it could remain undisturbed for years.

Ah our *spare* rope migrates first from the lazerette to the aft lockers, then to the cellar, then to the fishing boat then to the lock up and then to the skip where it should have gone in the first place!

Its handy to have one long rope on board and thats probably what it is. You will use it only rarely but when you need it a short rope wont do.

Yep - I had a heavy 18mm 20m long job that I hated ... then aug. 2007 the request came - you couldn't tow us could you. That rope earnt it's keep then.

But that rope you have OP - is not good quality stuff - that's economy hairy poly ...

Yes, and as I already state, I have 100 metres of anchor rope. Also I have already had to tow a boat and I did that with all me warps.

It's going. Tomorrow. Gone.

Thanks all.

Maybe just keep a bit for when you have to moor somewhere dirty?
I would stick it on ebay or give it away. Probably ebay!

Ebay...40 metres of Polyprop rope..used but good..£45.

Postage from Turkey...£325...air freight

I've got two long 25mm warps that came with the boat. The previous owner went through the Panama Canal and it was apparently a requirement. They come in handy from time to time and we are using one this year on the Fiumicino canal. I also use them occasionally for extra anchor warp. They are a pain to stow, though.
