Should I buy Dubarry boots?

Had 3 pairs of Dubarry, First pair were good value and great quality, and more comfortable than carpet slippers, dry for 1 year and lasted 3 years. Sent them back for resoleing, but they came back smaller and didn't fit anymore. Second were from after offshoring production, dry for half a season, and fell apart after two years. Third pair leaked from day one, and fell to bits after a year. Then had 2 pairs of Henri Lloyd boots, lasted better, but not quite as comfortable, before that company sold out to the asset strippers.

Now use either Dunlop rubber wellies, or shoes with Sealskinz socks. I don't have a problem paying half a grand for good footwear, nothing is more important, but I do have a problem paying these prices for stuff that's carelessly and quickly bashed together. You could play the game of warranty bingo with these companies, but that just makes sure you only have boots for half the time. Now if someone wanted to give me a new pair of goretex welly's every year, I would be a happy man, but on a cost benefit basis, I don't think anyone currently makes a pair worth bothering with, unless you're rich enough that £50 per day seems like a reasonable price for very slightly more comfortable feet.

Yes the same. Very old but hardly used pair. I got them out and after wearing them for a short while the heel disintegrated. View attachment 148117
I've got a pair of these and i live in fear of this happening or the soles hardening but so far it seems like I either got a good pair or I've not done to it something that caused this to happen. I wonder if some deck washing detergent or boot cleaning product might have done it?

Actually I never wore them since they were a bit tight. I put them away years ago and only recently got them out. I tried them on and after walking around for a short while I noticed bits of something on the floor…….the bits of the boot soles!

Did you notice if the soles went hard as well and the broken down rubber was hard brittle bits or soft? Just reading this seems hardening through oxidization might be it A Guide to Rubber Degradation & Rubber Deterioration Causes

Dubarry surely must be wondering what went wrong suddenly as its destroyed their reputation. They must have changed something in the rubber so could presumably go back to the old formulation.

There doesn’t seem to be any sign that they have even noticed, let alone taken action. Did they change hands, or were they always greedy idle bastards?

That’s a powerful recommendation!

I’ll just have to grit my teeth and make a major investment.

Shame that Dubarrys are now expensive junk. I loaned my wife’s pair to a friend who was doing a zero to hero and they came back in four pieces.
I also much prefer leather to more modern (and probably more efficient) materials, but it seems today there are not suitable options :(

You are certainly not alone.

The late HW Tilman was almost obsessed with the idea of leather sea boots. Had Dubarrys existed, he would have been their launch customer! Given his choices of latitude, weather and temperature, one can see why.

They do look promising. Anyone bought and used a pair?

If they are anything like the quality of their land based stuff they will be excellent. I have a pair of leather lined boots that I have been shooting in for over 15 years, they are now coming up to 20 years old and still serviceable I just lubricate the side zip occasionally.

Although he would have complained bitterly about the price. ;) ?
