Short winch handle?

Wow, some great responses there. Plenty of food for thought thank you.

It looks as though the most cost effective route may be to construct a custom handle for now, whilst keeping an eye on the ads for a pair of newer winches which feature a rachet action.

The socket route looks the way to go initially, thats easy to do and even I could make the handle up with the minimum of tools.

Update of sorts.

At boat today to measure stuff up and fit radio etc and thought I'd check my winches. They are most definitely one way and don't rachet backwards.

I dug around in the lockers and unearthed the old winch handle that I'd discarded in favour of a modern plastic one ages ago, on the basis that it was way too long and heavy for the spray hood. (Never having actually tried it).... This was the handle I intended to chop and weld.

Blow me down, it's a ratcheting handle!!

To think I'd had one all along and didn't realise.
