Hi,

Are there good reasons to register with the Small Ships Register. My boat isn't registered at all at the moment and it seems to only cost £10 to do so.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

Spooky, just looked and there doesn't seem to be much to it apart from overseas visits.

Well then if your not going to France, dont bother. It's meaningless.

<font color=blue>In theory a registered vessel enjoys the same rights and privileges as a Merchant Ship under international maritime law. If and when you wish to re-sell finance companies look more kindly on a registered vessel than they do a non registered one. If you are in a position to obtain a warrant for a privileged ensign you will amongst other criteria need to be registered.

If you want to enter another country's waters, the boat will have to be registered. Part III (SSR) is perfectly fine for this, provided the boat is not owned by a company and is less than 24m. Part 1 is mainly used if the boat is owned by a company. Part III is cheap, Part 1 isn't.

One other reason to go for Part 1 is if you want to protect the name and keep it yours 'by rights'.

There are a host of

other countries infinitely preferable to France. Cheaper, prepared to help with the language, less crowded, just as good (or better) weather and not much further away (unless you live in the deprived south)(or is that depraved?).

The boat I bought was in the Norwegian ships register and therefore my bank would accept part of the value of the boat as security for the loan. In Norway there is another small boat register but that is used more for tracing stolen boats by the insurance companies (and the tax office!)
