I am thinking off using the above engine oil again in my VP D6 435 engines as per the last service.

Is this a better product to use than either Volvo Truck {which I can get a good deal on} or VP Marine Oil - I would very much appreciate your feedback on this subject ;)

Does this oil retain its molecular structure longer than other makes before it starts breaking down enabling the oil change period to be extended like with cars if you use a superior oil rather than standard product{Audi for example offers 2 grades of oil}

Superior?

Good quality and perfectly acceptable lube oil which meets Volvo VDS spec what else do you require.........Performs exactly the same job as the Volvo branded stuff.

Why do you have to change the oil every year if the boat is used all year round and you only do around 100 engine hours which in my reckoning works out around 3,000 miles travelled in a car at a average speed of 30mph

Surely if you use a good grade engine oil and have the oil tested say every 100 hours and the results come back ok then the oil and filter changes can be extended imho

Oil sampling has its limitations, normal sampling does not have TBN (Total Base Number) or TBN (Total Acid Number) If you require TBN Vs TAN sample is more expensive than simple wear metals. By the time you have collected lube sample sent off sample, paid fee and worked out results easier and cheaper to just stick in 12/15 liters of oil.

Automotive duty cycles quite unlike marine, engines used infrequently sweat internally causing TAN # can increase even if motor has never been used.

I deal a lot with CAT 58 liter 3512 and Cummins KTA 50 engines on stand by generators, tested on line for 1 hour a month, lube oils and filters always changed every six months at anything up to 246 liters of oil a pop, now that makes your eyes water! And not forgetting up to six oil filters.

Many thanks for your response sir - we need 20 litres per engine still less than the 246 litres of oil a pop you mentioned

I do not do Green engines however 20 litres of lube for a 5.5 liter motor seems a gut busting lot, so I understand your dilemma.

Going back to your original question price up the plain vanilla Audi lube to VW505.01 spec per liter, not the expensive long drain stuff. Now get price for 20 liter tub of Shell Rimula........Around £60.

Paul. D6 requires 20 litres per change.

Terry, Henry supplied the oil last time I serviced the motors at a good price, be nice to him he might supply you.

I think thats the oil we use in the older non dpf trucks at work, never heard of any problems in the 6.5 years ive been there, also works well in land rovers!

Hi LionsDen. I buy my Rimula direct from what used to be Shell Direct and is now Emo Oil. It comes in 20 ltr drums and you have to buy a minimum of 100 ltrs, but it's delivered free to your door.

As a guide, the last time I checked, a drum of RCX 15-40 was 41.60, RCX 40 was 48.40. Plus VAT.

My contact is Phil Evans, Boat Lubricants Dept, Emo Oil Ltd, 01925 858608

No connection, etc, etc.

I also need about 20 litres of this oil for my engine service, wonder if its possible for 5 of us to club together and buy 100 litres?

Regards

Andy

Where abouts are you? I need to order some as well. The drop would be made in one drop.

Hi Piers,

I live in Bristol & the boat is in Brixham so meeting somewhere in Devon/Somerset/Dorset shouldn't be a problem for me.

Seems to make sense to get together on this 1 and do a group buy.

If you or any others want to take this further then PM me and we can discuss etc

Regards

Andy

More than happy to organise the group buy, if delivery to Yeovil is OK with everyone.

Hi Piers, any idea why a minimum of 100 litres? I buy whatever quantity I want (usually 40 litres) of Shell Rimula from Emo about a mile down the road from me in Exeter.
