Hi,
This is probably an old chestnut but.....
I have a pair of venerable Lewmar 40 dual speed winches which do the job nicely. The only real problem is that they are not self tailing. The cost of replacing them with decent STs is around £600. Is it possible to retrofit new drums with the ST magic bit? The loading isn't especially high (total sail area is less than 35 square meters.) There is a sort of rubber gripper on the top of the winches at present but this system doesn't work very well.
I had thought of looking for second hand bargains but I suspect that a load of second hand kit probably becomes second hand at dead of night when the owner is safely tucked up in bed.
