I own a Samphire 26 built in 1979. These boats were fitted with SHE-DEK which is now partly delaminating. How can I remove the SHE-DEK particuarly the non-slip material between the "planks "to provide a flush surface for recovering ?

Those Shedecks are a nightmare, although when new they were great. I would just cover with treadmaster..?

Re: Just curious!

It is a synthetic teak looking deck made of GRP, so called as was designed for the She Class of yachts designed by S&S in the 70's and built by South Hampshire Marine. They worked well and looked reasonable when new, but now are prone to delamination and general discolouring.

Thanks Warrior 40.
I have in mind to cover the deck with Treadmaster. Clearly this requires a flat surface for the adhesive. The non-slip material between the "planks " (silicon carbide ? ) stands proud above the planks approx 2or 3 mm. That is the problem !

Samphire SHE DEK problem Re: Tootry

I now have a Samphire 23 with the problem of the delaminating deck finish. Did you find a good way of removing the original deck finish and non slip ridges please? I have in mind to replace it with non slip deck paint.

Re: Samphire SHE DEK problem Re: Tootry

A couple of winters ago, a neighbouring boat was struggling to remove a treadmaster deck with chisels etc. I lent him a Bosch power chisel (I think that's what it's called) and when I saw him the following weekend he told me that he had removed more in one hour with that, than he had in a whole day by hand. I think mine was about £39. Keep the blade sharp and you might want to round the corners just in case.

Re: Samphire SHE DEK problem Re: Tootry

Thank you, Goldie, that is a definite possibility. I have tried chiselling by hand and it is indeed an amazingly slow process! As the deck is something of a plastic nature, I had wondered what effect a wallpaper steam stripper would have.
