It causes more damage to allow it to revolve,I always engage astern but i would assume that ahead does the same job.It causes less resistance when stopped anyway.

You should put it in astern, not ahead as this can allow the propellor to turn the engine over slowly which is undesirable. It also puts the strain the wrong way round on th gearbox. If you have a two bladed propeller it is worth marking it so that when stopped it is lined up with one blade behind the P bracket to reduce water resistance. If a three bladed unit just stop it. If it is a folding propeller you need to put it in astern to fold the blades in.

This no only stops the noise and viabration but saves wear on your cutlass bearing (the bit inside the P bracket) and on the gearbox.

In an ideal world (money no object?) a shaft lock would be best.

I think leaving it to revolve will wear out your stern gland (not sure whether this holds true for "traditional" greased/stuffer box affair, but yes for dry gland), so stopping it makes sense - I've always done it anyway!. Just make sure you're not going too fast when you put it into reverse - it makes a hell of a clunk if you are.

Only problem I seem to get is that the only way to then get it out of reverse again is to start the engine, then take it out of gear - anybody else find this?
