I have twin 60mm propshafts with seals by Deep Sea Seal (Wartsilla) when the engines and propshafts were replaced the seals were not.

On my recent trip, one of the seals was leaking, however this has now stopped.

I though about fitting new rubber seals, when she is next lifted, heres the rub -
they are to order only, delivery around 3 weeks, cost around £2500 (parts only) !!!!

Looking on the web I could replace with complete new units for £1250 from Tides Marine.
They even have a method of leaving a spare seal on the shaft, saving on a lift out in an emergency.

Does anyone have any experience of Tides Marine seals?
Thanks in advance.
Roy

Warstilla took over crane shaft seals, I buy mine from Lancing marine so give them a try, they have always had stock.

60mm shaft is not a standard size.

Deep Sea Seals are the spwn of the devil, life is 5 years in my book not a good or a safe seal relying on the elasticity of the rubber to hold the seal, when they get old they loose their elasticity and go hard.

I changed to Tides Marine seals a good system in my book and I have a spare set on the shaft in case of emergency.

Look on line and on youtube to see how to fit them.

Silette are exhibiting a new shaft seal at the show - from what I could see it looked sturdy.

Quick update, spoke to Tides Marine today, couldn't of been more helpful, very knowledgeable, give me some advice on checks to make before purchase and all ex stock.
Seems the way to go...

Tides marine seals are the way to go. Normally get about 5 years out of the lip seal then the spare needs to be fitted. Simple job to fit the spare seal whilst in the water.

I can't see why any manufacturer would fit any other type of seal.

That sounds familiar. I had a similar problem last summer on my Italian boat - see here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=284241&highlight=deep+sea+seals
I am distinctly unimpressed with the design of the Deep Sea Seal and whilst I replaced mine with the same at the time because I couldn't get anything else, I have recently purchased a set of Tides seals to fit this winter. Based on forum recommendations, the Tides units seem to be very reliable and I like the way a spare seal holder can be fitted on the shaft such that the seal can be changed without extracting the shaft.
I don't know how you got a price of £2500 for a set of 60mm Deep Sea Seals as I was quoted £920 as you can see from my thread. The Tides seals are about the same price plus a bit extra for the spare seal holders

Keep an eye on your stern seals, they keep you afloat!

Replace religeously when the manufacturer says end of life, I know of a yacht that sank folloeing a stern seal failure that was 2 years out of life and only a partial payment was made.

I have read you post, it seems we have different seals, mine have an inflatable "emergency" seal, they have been plugged off, I removed the plug, water poured in, this means the seal has failed or been deployed.
Deep sea seals were very helpful with their advice even send me a drawing of my seal with records showing my boat name on it !
The £2.5k is for 2 sets of main seals, inflatable seals, plus retaing pieces.
I have requested a a discount but as yet no joy.
I don't doubt the engineering going into the product, perhaps the MOD can afford it, but I wonder if the Tides marine solution is better suited to my requirements

As I understand it, Tides seals are fitted by major mobo manufacturers like Fairline and Sunseeker so I guess they must be well engineered

Hi Roy,
Have the Tides seals on my vessel from new and still on the originals. Absolutely no drips etc so well pleased. Also have 2 spares per shaft already in situ just in case.
