Shaft dia/hp

If I want to run 250 Ford sabres with 1:1 boxes what is the min diameter shaft I can get away with? Assume I use monel or the other stuff, T met is it?

My shafts currently are 316 and I'd have to change them.

Hi! as a guide mine are one and three quarter inch stainless on 235hp volvos with 2 to 1 gearboxes so more torque (via gearboxes) but less power( from engines). on a Princess 41.

As I remember, Vetus include a shaft sizing bit in their catalogue. I'll try to find my copy

Looks like 40mm in Remanit 4462 and 45mm in 316 I guess.

Thanks Phil, in aquamet it looks like 1.3 inches so probably 1 3/8 would do it, whicih is pants cos it means boring out the p brackets if I decide to go ahead.

Ben, 180hp is max on 11/4 with 316, more with monel. You will be using 1:1 boxes so you may get away with 11/4 in Monel. Give Mike Bellamy a call on 01273-410025 to be certain.

on 316 1.5" is max 263hp at 2500rpm safety factor of 2
on Monel K500 1" is max 261hp at 2500rpm SF2
on Aquamet 17 1" is max 273hp at 2500rpm SF2

1 1/4" would be fine with 1:1 boxes. 1 3/8 for safety sake.

Ours are 1.5 inches with 270@2800 on 1:1, and 32 years old.So I guess thats safe.
