I have to change my shaft coupling and due to circumstances the only one that I can fit is a VETUS No:8 which weighs in at some 28lbs., about 20lbs. more than the twenty year old original. Can I expect a loss of power due to this additional weight?

The engine is a Thorneycroft 90 with a PRM 140 gearbox, and that is the reason for the No:8 coupling to match the flange size; a smaller flange and I could have used the next size down and a lot less weight.

Shouldn't affect the power, but I would be a little concerned about the weight on the output bearings. Could you not get an adaptor flange made up to fit the smaller coupling? shouldn't be too difficult an engineering problem, just a simple flange bolted to the adaptor and gearbox, only needs to be about 1/2" thick.

or you could try your local automotive bearing suppliers, they should be able to advise you or direct you to someone who can.
