Shackle flush pin?

Fitting a new anchor chain etc and replacing the original sealine 6mm shackles which were a screw head pin type. I am replacing with 6mm certified shackles (from Jimmygreen) which are the pin hole type, however it doesn't quite fit through the hole into the anchor locker, the uncertified 6mm will but the pin looks too small for my liking.

So my question, anyone got any suggestions what is the best option. Looking around on google I see allen key type but they are all stainless steel, I am looking for galvanised.

One option is to trim off the pin hole on the 6mm certified shackle and it will then fit through the hole. I can use something like serious glue to ensure it won't undo, but by cutting it I expose the non-galvanised steel, which I guess I could paint the cut section.

Any suggestions gratefully received

One of those connectors will do that but why not splice the rope onto the chain

We cut the tag off, and then made screw driver slot in the "bolt", granted we cannot seize it, but a bit of loc-tite does the job. To remove, either grips or hacksaw does it for us.

Surly the shackle acts as a spring washer , as you tighten the pin the shackle is drawn in, as such any impact twist action from the chain has to overcome the shackle spring.

By cutting the end off you loose the locking spring, accepted locktight will hold against a little impact twist action but once it gives its gone !

add to that the shackle now has a new weak point in that the shackle pin is free to slide out of the none threaded end.


I wouldnt want to rely on a shackle which has had the end chopped off even if it was spot welded as the locking spring is lost.


Rope needs to be spliced, its not difficult and doesnt take long, a lot easier than an eye splice / end splice.

I don't think any weakness will occur by just cutting off the pin hole part of the "tag". The protuding bit of the pin just before the pin hole will remain intact i.e. the spring as you describe - not sure I described that too well. What I am thinking of doing is cutting the tag part off after I have fitted the pin and tensioned with a spanner etc.

Ours is a fishing boat and as such the hook is up and down all the time, the bit that gets rusty is the chain, i.e the rough ground gradually wears away the galvanising. We clean the rust marks off the deck with oxalic acid,so not a problem. as for splicing up the chain good idea but will wear away quicker than a short eye splice used as we use it.
