I've acquired a "Stanley London Sextant". Never used one. Will never use one in anger. But like the idea of knowing how to use one and just like the allround brassyness!

However, it seems I'm missing 2 parts:
  • Index Mirror (possibly adjusters for it too)
  • Scale magnifier lens (the bracket is there)

I think what I've acquired is an original rather than a repro (although it may be a good repro that looks well abused!)

I'd like to make it work. The scale magnifier is less critical, and I suspect I just need to find someone who does lenses and can help.

The index Mirror is however pretty fundamental.

Would be interested in people's thoughts on if such things ever appear as individual parts or the viability of transferring from a repro?

An original WF Stanley sextant is a pretty rare beast, and probably ought to live in a museum. There are loads of cheap repro ones around. It would be interesting to do a series of horizontal angle checks between a repro copy and a genuine certified sextant. Mine is 1943 US Navy, and I know it's still accurate, having used it in earnest.
