Been offered a 2010 Seago 4 man Life Raft at what seems like a very good price, but it will need a service in 2013. Anyone any idea how much these things cost ? Can one do it oneself ?

You should not under any circumstances try this yourself. When you do get it professionaly serviced, do go and watch and if necessary add or remove items. (no idea on cost)

Depends on the raft - my 6-man ISO9650 Seago cost IIRC ~£300 to service last year. If you have a dry gas source, a vacuum pump, source of LiO2 cells, weighing machine, new flares, etc., etc. DIY is a possibility but again IIRC the labour costs were not that great.
Only you will know if you ever get to the point of regretting a self-service job. The raft has a 12 year guaranteed life with 3 year servicing and yearly after that so your costs could be the price + 4x£300 for 10 years - do look at Premium or other renters for short loans. And then there is the fact that only a tiny proportion of liferafts are ever used in extremis.

Thanks guys at £170 ono it seemed a bargain, but maybe not so after all. Seago have just quoted me £199 plus VAT. I can't see myself going further at the moment than more hops to Holland so will suffice with my inflatable on the foredeck.

Expect to pay £200-250. There aren't many places who'll service Seago liferafts, so might be worth starting to look for a convenient one.

I think older rafts would have been more feasible to self-service (but then again, they needed it more often) because they were just folded up like a dinghy (albeit more carefully). But new ones are vacuum packed, so you would need a special machine and a supply of the bags.

I see you are in South London so Croydon based Adec might be your best bet. I have just taken one in to them and they quoted something like £130 for the inspection plus the cost of repairs or spares needed.

Average service cost seems to be around £175, plus flares/parts etc. If Seago need a service at 3 & 6 years, then followed by annual services, they are in the long run more expensive than many other makes which only require 3 year services throughout their life. Also, Seago have far fewer service agents than others.

Just had my Seago 4-man valise serviced. Total cost was £264, and that was the cost I was quoted back in November, when I asked the service centre. Everything was replaced or renewed, and I am happy with that.

I often wonder when sellers on eBay say a service would be about £60 or so. Not true. The vacuum bag was £32 and the Lithium cell for canopy was £38 for a start.

A full service is required every 3 years.
