Does the boat need to be out of the water to get a diesel inboard serviced like an outboard?

For a normal service, no. I recommend the RYA one day diesel course and you can do it yourself.

The engine and gearbox themselves are BETTER serviced afloat: no problems with running it up to temperature and checking drive. The prop, cutless bearing, anodes etc. need looking at out of the water.
