A bit long winded but humour me.

In these days where the reputation of 'some' boat brokers are down there with Banks, Politicians and the Tax man I bring you a story of a broker who is a beacon of trust and great service; who is this – Chris Harridge and his team at Offshore Power Boats of Lymington.

We decided around 6 months ago to change our current boat; she has served us well and kept us safe in our forays around the East Coast and near continent but it was time to move up a bit. We had hung our noses over a Swift Trawler looking over these at boat shows and decided this was the boat for us. We found an excellent example at OPB Lymington and from the outset Chris and Steve were extremely professional and helpful. We paid a deposit and agreed a sea trial last Saturday, with the help of Nick Trainer our surveyor (who I can also thoroughly recommend) the Swift was tested and came out with a clean bill of health which in fairness for a 2012 model it should. Based on this likely outcome I had set up a CHAPS transfer some days before to OPB to clear yesterday with shipping set at 8.00am this morning.

Sea Trial

Yesterday morning I chased the Halifax where the funds were to confirm the CHAPS was being made “yes we are just doing it now” by 11.00am I get a text message saying the CHAPS has been processed. I ring Chris and tell him to look out for the funds in the next couple of hours. After two hours with no funds I make numerous calls to various people in the bank all almost indignantly saying the funds have gone (and they have from my account). By 1630 I am climbing the walls but Chris remains ice cool, he then gets a call from his Bank to say that funds have been transferred but my Bank have c*cked up and put me as the beneficiary. I ring my bank where after putting them straight check and apologise, admit the mistake and say they will resolve first thing in the morning. I relay to Chris who must have been concerned but remains cool, I sent him a cut and paste from my account showing the funds have gone and give him my Bank Managers contact details to verify if that makes him more comfortable but he says no need.

This morning the Halifax contact HSBC admit their mistake ask if they can put the funds in OPB account Halifax will send a fax explaining the error to cover HSBC, they decline saying the funds have to be sent back to Halifax for them to re CHAPS and it could take 48 hours. Meanwhile the Swift is loaded and ready for the off but no signs of a resolution. Chris takes a leap of faith and releases the boat to save fouling up the transport and additional costs to me. The rest of the day has been a farce with HSBC saying the money has been sent back, Halifax saying they have not got it, HSBC saying they made an error in transacting, they will get a manager involved but it won’t be done today, me climbing the walls some more and Chris remaining calm. So currently our new pride and joy is on its way but the funds have still not transferred. I feel highly embarrassed by the whole episode although bear no fault. In this day and age I find it incredible we can all transfer funds via Internet banking without an issue but because of the sum this has to be done by CHAPS with a charge and the most basic requirement needed of correct sort code, account number and beneficiary are c*ocked up causing such frustration. Vicky Pollard is alive and well in banking!

Tomorrow is another day and hopefully this will be resolved in the morning (I thought that this morning), I look forward to completing my side of the agreement ASAP.

If you are in the market for a Nimbus or one of the used craft OPB have available I can heartily recommend them as professional, honourable and a pleasure to deal with, Chris will probably be in the pub having a large one after the day I have given him! He is though a thoroughly decent honourable man and in these days of concerns over some brokers he is a shining example of a good one.

I wholeheartedly echo your comments about Chris and his team, a real breath of fresh air when I have bought and sold through them.

Congratulations on your new boat.

Cheers

Tetleys

Lovely boat PKS , shame to see her leave the Haven . Hope you have years of pleasure on board and all goes smoothly .
Banks eh :( as long as they are ok who cares !!!!?? ******rs

I saw her this morning on the transporter go past my house, looked very nice. There was a chap running full tilt after the lorry shouting" STOP DRIVER bring it back the cheque's bounced"

PKS, a really challenging couple of days for you, but it sounds like great service from the broker. Best wishes with your new pride and joy, she looks fantastic!

Thanks guys.

I will be taking this up with the bank formally once they do what they should have done first time round. My prime concern is getting Chris his cash.

It has rather taken the edge off what should have been an exciting few days but once it is all settled I can relax and start to enjoy our new ship. She is an excellent example and the service from OPB has been simply brilliant.

We certainly enjoyed our run out from Lymington and would consider a summer down exploring your 'manor' :)

I hope at the very least your bank don't have the nerve to take the Chaps charge off you having f***ed up so comprehensively.

And I would hope they would go lot further by way of compensation for two grey hair days!

Keep us posted! :o

Super boat - always like ST34's. Banking procedures!!! Don't suppose anyone thought to CHAPS the money back? No cos no-one had agreed to pay the £25 fee etc. Reminds me of when my bank lost £60k of my money for a few months. I asked them to sort it out - literally 30 minutes worth of looking at ledger entries. Would they? No, we've logged this as a complaint. Me, I don't want to complain I just want you to look at the ledgers to confirm where you've put it. We have to log it as a complaint. Cue endless stoopid letters saying your complaint is being dealt with blah, blah and finally they did check the ledgers, found exactly what I told them they'd find and paid me some paltry sum in interest for the time the money hadn't shown in my account.

Phew, feel much better now.

Anyway, enjoy the boat. :D

Yes, Chris has been more than fair with me too. Another firm recommendation.
Just to explain if anyone is interested- in fact a Chaps payment should be made within two hours, but that isnt really monitored, and should also be an immediate receipt. However, while received, it then somewhat depends on the processing procedures at the receiving bank- larger amounts might drop out for money laundering checks (this could be the case here due to the amount!).Also- and if you think about it, it does make sense- a receiving bank is in a bit of a sticky position if it ignores the true payment instruction and pays someone else. I think the last Chaps payment time is about 2.00 oclock for same day, so if this happened after that, the bank couldnt have got the money back ,same day. With about 150k automated Chaps payment a day, it isnt so easy if you then need to go manual on one.
Again, just for info, depending on your bank, you can make a faster payment of up to £100k, and that, as you say, will indeed be instantaneous. However, like a Chaps, if you get a detail wrong... !
So, while frustrating that your bank messed it up, the procedures are there to make sure that your money doesnt end up in some dodgy tax haven location-which I guess would have been alot more worrying !

Thanks Rafiki

Merlyn - we may bring her back for season in the future when we have more time.

Harpsden - Good to hear you are pleased with your ST34 we are looking forward to getting to know ours.

gjgm - Thanks for explaining the finer details of the CHAPS system, I do understand but it is just all frustrating when you are at the wrong end.

The update is the funds have now returned to my account, so are being re CHAPS (ed) now; so by lunch time hopefully Chris can breathe easy. As I have said I can't speak highly enough about his whole attitude to this issue.

Hopefully the owner of the boat is equally comfortable with their boat being released without payment being made.

Maybe over 25 years in the motor trade have made me cynical. I've seen every scam and piece of bad luck known to man. Cars smashed up on the way home, people dying, fraudsters, villains and chancers.

I would go feckin ballistic if a broker released my boat prior to clear funds having been received.

Only last month we foiled an attempt to defraud us of £90k using a loophole in the way banks report money coming into your account.

Enjoy your boat. If you do find any problems with it no panic, you haven't paid for it yet :)

Henry

Fair enough.

The boat was listed in their Brokerage section.

If they are happy to take a punt with their own money that's entirely down to them !

Have fun.

Henry

I agree Henry and why given that it was a genuine Bank error I have been so impressed with their attitude.

Henry,

Are you able to enlighten us so we don't get hit by the same scam? Might save someone on here a chunk of money especially with large chunks being paid out for boats these days by online transfer.
