Boat upside down - won't happen with a drogue

I find this a worrying statement, but can't put my finger on exacly why, other than saying "never say never".

Breaking waves beam on are what capsize boats . . . a drogue ensures that the stern is presented to the sea, and should also slow the vessel down enough to prevent pitchpoling, which is the only other mechanism for capsize I am aware of.
Also, you really shouldn't be out in mid ocean in a boat with a sufficiently small AVS to allow it to remain upside down in these conditions.
(All my comments here refer to cruising monohulls - racing boats and multihulls are a completely different matter)

Nick, that's all well and good on paper but life is seldom like that and the anatomy of every 'accident' turns out to be a combination of events or circumstances. If you can't deploy your drogue it is on no use to you. If you can't deploy your extinguisher, or if it fails, or turns out to be inadequate then it is of no use to you. Your first aid kit is really pretty limited - as you learn on the full first aid course, you don't need the first aid kit for the 'serious' stuff like stopping bleeding, CPR and shock. You are not so much limited by the kit you are carrying but your own skills and, to an extent, luck. When it all goes against you all you can do is call for help. David
