Semi-Displacement and Planing Hulls, Question?

The trouble with IPS is that some manufacturers seem to be charging a premium for an IPS equipped boat over a shaftdrive one which more than negates any fuel saving. I thought IPS was supposed to result in less expensive boats overall because IPS uses smaller engines and is allegedly cheaper to install? No point in paying £30k+ for an IPS boat to save £2k a year on fuel

Fair comemnt Mike and yes I would agree some are jumping on the IPS bandwagon thing and charging more than they should purely cus they can get away with it. The IPS unit itself is quite expensive but some of that should be offset by the quicker installation time however as you know where there is a demand and people prepared to pay extra for something there will be those that will milk it for all its worth.

We don't, in fact the 56, 52 & 63 in prelims priced up with shafts against ips came out almost the same.

Well can't tell you anything about the 63 or I would have to kill you after, needless to say it is another world first.

56 can be found here........... 56

The 52 below, first time it has been shown in the UK so a Forum exclusive /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, even before MBY and MBM /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

A fully enclosed hardtop with saloon up arrangement so actually has more cabin space and an extra en suite, even a laundry area below decks.

First '0' hull finsihed shortly and will start sea trials in May.

Nice, very nice, but i much prefer the Absolute style of windows to that Azimut looking style of window!
Interesting owners cabin in the centre of the boat.

Looking forward to more pics of that and the 63 in future. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers

Al.
BTW, you can confirm it is a Planing hull?!!? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Er... yes its a planing hull /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Owners cabin is interesting cus as far as I am aware its the only one on this type/size of sports cruiser that has a full 2 metres of headroom throughout.

"a year or two from now, oh bu88er it is outselling trads and in five, why didn't I switch to it, now my shafty thing is outdated, smelly, noisey, expensive and drinks for England and dropped like a stone SH."

My remarks about the lager planing boats becomes far fewer in the UK I think still apply. I still think those spending 600k to £1m on a boat factor fuel costs in. In fact of the boat owners of that size I know they all factor it in and will change behaviour as a result of the huge increase we are facing.

It seems to me, with all respect, that those with trade connections and that includes Ari want to play that down and convince people that the fuel hike will not make such a difference. However the subject has been done to death and we simply have to stand back and wait to see what will happen.

I also think that you cannot change the basic physics. So for example, I do see the displacement power cat design capable of doing 18 to 20 knots growing in numbers because of it low fuel consumption.

So even allowing for all developments I see more of a swing to SD and D hull forms.

As regards technology, I am planing on purchasing a boat that is 40% more fuel efficient than its competitors because of technology - the Marlow - sure technology can improve things but until we have a new inexpensive fuel source, the hape of the future will be IMHO that of needing to change hulk shape.

This has been an interesting and educational discussion
