Re: CrapDreamer

Sorry, i just couldn't help myself!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

BTW, I hear Loch Lomond is a lovely place to cruise, Sail, Powerboat or whatever you fancy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Meddy\'s book

I think there's an excellent book-writing opportunity here. I mean, "sell up and sail" bangs on about how to sell the house and live on a boat and go off on a boat. But most people aren't persuaded and don't want to do this so praps his trarget market will be far bigger, addressing those who *think* about going - but don't, as well as zillions of layabouts and cautious types worried that they might be missing out.

He could have nice sections on how shite it is miles from anywhere, another section comparing massive cost of airplanes, foreign boatfixing and so on, the plentiful rubbish food, another bit on dodgy health issues sunstroke etc and then some nice pix of self in his kitchen, or in the garden snoozing. All with direct experience of daring to dream, fulfilling the dream and then packing it in cos it's not that much kop in reality. Excellent stuff i reckon.

Thanks Phil

Its nothing tangible really it, its just that we aren't enjoying the use of the boat in the same way we did when we could pop to it at weekends (and even during the week if the weather looked good). We wouldn't have known this if we hadn't given it a go so no worries about how much it has cost us.

In all honesty I am not in too much of a hurry to sell as everything for this year is booked and paid for, but we will see how it goes and enjoy it in the meantime.

Regards

Martyn

Take your point jfm and, FWIW, on balance, its worth the hassle for me to be in the Med. However, your Saturday schedule to Nice is a bit too much like a typical business trip for me, in and out on the same day, and I cant be arsed to do that just for 7-8hrs on my boat being a lazy git. I dont know what your family life is like but other commitments usually preclude ad hoc trips to the boat for me. Boating weekends in the Med for me are a massive logistical exercise involving grandparents, dog sitters, plant waterers and key holders for the army of builders and gardeners SWMBO always seems to have employed.
Btw can you rent a 15m berth 30 mins from Nice airport?

Hulldreamer

Brilliant. I am looking forward to a whole season of meddy whingeing about *having* to go to the boat in poxy balearix, pesky sunshine, all with snidey comparison about how much better it wd be IF ONLY etc etc.

Perhaps this is is a whol new tendency? I spect there are people on Ferrari owners websites sick of the bloody thing and dreaming of a nice Fiesta again too, and soon there will be long queues at chip shops and loads of kids trying to sneak into Butlins. Happy days!

Hmm yes, but the business trip thing is all in the mind though. The similarity ends with the plane ride. Actually I much prefer 20min drive to airport then 3 hours in lounge+ plane +taxi, to driving myself to Suth Coast UK for say 3 hours. At least I can do something other than drive. You need to get a Priority Pass Card if using non BA airports, because there are ok lounges at Luton and Nice, frexample

Yup the home logistics are tricky, point taken. But if I go for the day often various family members choose not to go, so I get nice day pratting about with boat by myself or just SWMBO or one offspring. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes, I haven't asked but wd be pretty confident you can rent 15m in Antibes for starters (airport 20min). Other places too. A friend has just been fixed with a 23m berth rental in Antibes, at 2 weeks notice, by the good offices and a few phonecalls/emails by folk off this forum. You can also buy 15mx5. I just dont believe this "can't get berths in SofF" stuff.

We're taking a different approach. Rather than pile all our money into a big boat that sits down in the med depreciating, we've bought a house down there with loads more room for than you can get with a boat for the money and a ok ish pool and we are going to buy a day boat to use for our boating trips that will be dry stored when we are not there. Property price is still rising even in the SOF, minimal running costs for boat and loads of room. If the weather is bad it ain't so miserabel being in a house and you can use properly all year round. Can also hire other boats for the day if I want a change. Oh and we have a day boat in the UK for messing about on the rare occasion we get some son here and want o go out for a spin after work or on a weekend. Probably pay for 2 boats plus a place in france for the price of one big boat in the meddy.

Re: can\'t get berths in south of france

yep agreed - tho this is all provided that you only want one berth and later, another one. I think this is cos there are loads, hence out of all the loads, a few sink or they get sick of it like that weirdo meddreamer or other stuff happens, perhaps involving rushing off to la ciotat, ahem. Well, anyway, same thing happens with footy matches - always loads of tickets for sale really.

Re: can\'t get berths in south of france

There are even some wot buy berths down there that then don't buy a boat, or even really try to buy a boat, they just fender kick for season after season leaving nice big berths for rent!!!

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain

England.
1 Day out fishing & lunch on friends boat berthed Gallions Reach
Arrived Gallions Sunday 08.30 hrs fill boat up from 5 gall drums nice smelly job no pumps at marina had to wait untill 10.30 for lock £10 charge headed downriver through brown choppy water & into Barking Creek for nosey round About 11.30 passed under A 13 bridge & promptly stoned by gang of yobs about 10 years old sitting under bridge smoking & drinking beer. Went further up creek & finished up in s--t creek when prop hit submerged supermarket trolly spent an hr changing prop, (luckily my friend carrys a spare one) & headed back. Yobs had moved elsewhere by now so no repeat performance now lots of canoes in creek much cursing & shouting mind your wake as we passed through them at the rapid rate of 4 knts. Back out on river & headed to Greenwich Yacht club for lunch..closed. Decided to stuff the fishing & cruise up to the Houses of Parliment. Under Tower Bridge no probs, then it started raining, and the kamakhazi ferrys & river buses appeared, no respect for other river users these animals. I swear to god if I had got my hands on one of them I would have hurt him bad.nearly shoved us into one of the bridge legs & laughed as he tore past. finally on the way back boarded by river police & interrogated to see if we were terrorists. however they were very polite & genial & a pleasure to deal with. And so back to gallions piss wet through. no fish & starving a typical day on the lower Thames.

Spain
Arrive boat at 09.00 buy 2 bags of ice 2 euros (freezer on pontoon)for coldbox for keeping fish fresh. Over to fuel pontoon gas up petrol 92 cents a litre. Out of marina into blue clear water heading for Isle Grossa & Farillion Rock 12nm @ 18knts very hot so shirts off. Arrive between Island & rock sea flat slight swell & no wind & drop anchor in 20 metres & start fishing after 2 hrs we have about 10 small fish to our credit & 1 decent Morey eel which is now in the cold box, then the Lampuga start to swim round the boat caught about 8 of these only keeping what we wanted to eat & returning the rest. getting on for 14.00 now & baking hot, rods away time for a swim. Sea is like bathwater & crystal clear 14.30 wind starts to get up time for lunch through the canal Tomas Maestow into the Mar Menor round the back of Sardine island & moor on one of the restaraunts pontoons just manage to squeeze in its packed. Spend the rest of the day eating sea food swimming telling stories & drinking ice cold beer. Leave Island just as wind is dropping 19.30 & slowly cruise back at about 8knts along coast in almost flat calm arrive back marina just as sun is dipping below horizon about 22.00. still no shirts, wash boat down give Morey eel to Marinero's & into Nautica club for good piss up.
..........................and you want to boat here.

Re: can\'t get berths in south of france

No Wakeup, I really cant believe that happens. Can't possibly. Never met anyone who would buy ......... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

weirdo!! weirdo !!

For a true definition of weirdo can I refer all readers to my previous comment regarding ironing on the swim platform - WHILST PLANING

Neither have I on the spur of the moment decided to wallpaper the underwater section of the hull with Copper sheeting only to find it falls off as soon as the boat is put back in the water (well shortly afterwards).

Neither have I kidnapped an esteemed boatless member of this forum by luring him on board with the promise of free drink and then in his intoxicated state kicking him off in a DIFFERENT COUNTRY!! - without passport!

And he calls me weird!

Just going slightly out of the box, have you considered leaving the 2855 in Spain for a while yet and buy a cheapish, small ski boat that you could tow and try out a few locations in UK and live with it a while before plunging in? May depend a bit on income and what you want to save/spend against cost of bringing med boat home or driving her home and so on. Might be worth a think>?

Prosser marine in Glasgow & Largs who are main dealers for Sealine and other ranges too, do sell loads of your kind of boat and they will do a deal anywhere. They probably account for many hundreds of the 12,000 boats currently registered for use on Loch Lomond.

Re: can\'t get berths in south of france

Oi... you lot. Some of us resemble that idiot ...

So what is wrong with fender kicking.. ?

BTW , just been down to Antibes and don't know where all these empty berths are , place looks like Tesco car park on a Friday night at the moment with some very strange mooring positions.

BTW ... skies are blue , sun is out . Great to look over at the snow-covered alps.

Don't understand this 'Wannabe in UK stuff' myself but then again not everyone lives in South East with easy access to Nice. Guess if you live on South Coast then you are closer to your boat.

Nice by far the easiest aviation access to Med ... enables all kind of flexibility . Heck I commuted here for 10+ years , and the air-connexions now even more numerous particularly on summer schedule.

Re: can\'t get berths in south of france

Never mind all that guff, have you bought a boat yet???? Any boat?? Even a manky old Riva ????? ;-)

Have you thought about boat sharing????

Find someone who has a boat in the UK and see if they would be interested in sharing boats.

They then get the benefit of owning 1/2 a boat in the MED and you ge the benefit of owning 1/2 a boat in the UK.

Sounds simple, I am sure it will not be so easy in practice.

Try posting on the forum you might find someone with an interest.

Re: VOTE - is meddy a bit weird moving back to the UK?

Well I've voted anyway, ticked all three boxes because I couldn't make my mind up.
